*) Info:
A 843 KB download for 8-14 players. (Yet higher than 10 makes for a massacre, methinks...)
*) General:
A domination map with four very well placed Control Points. The map makes use of the ancient pack of textures, with the quad-boobed angel texture (see screenshot) functioning as the map's name-giver. Three CPs are inside the main building, the fourth in a little cave at the far end of a canyon-ish outdoor section.
*) Worst:
The lighting is mostly red, and unfortunately so incredibly intense, that any detail of the textures (such as the turquise gems of some of the Aztec textures) is "reddened" beyond recognition. In the front part of the "castle" the red makes way for purply blue, luckily not half as intense. Light is sourced alright, but here and there the sheer amount of light doesn't appear realistically sourced by just a handful of torches.
The textures are another aspect I found wanting. I already mentioned the horrible redness of them. What makes it worse, is that they aren't aligned whatsoever at a spot or two, especially at the curved stairs leading down to the lower middle CP.
I have to say that the angel texture, much as I like it, is overused on this map; it's to be found even at the ceiling twice, where it doesn't even make any sense...
*) Bad:
The theme left me a little unconvinced. It never really struck me as an "ancient" map I was playing, rather than some medieval castle-thingy.
Architecture also isn't half as good as it could have been. Especially the sections featuring stairs had me cringe, but other sections make up for that.
*) Good:
Ambient sounds were where they belonged, music fitted nicely.
I came to love the item placement, but only after a few matches. You see, the author placed one powerful pickup next to each CP, only exception being the lower CP where you have to walk a little to get to a nice BKo'H "chappel". (Don't miss the Nali up on the wall! :) )
Flow was there, and actually was so good that I almost would have given it a score of 9, had it not been for a few spots throughout the map where architecture isn't exactly a friend of yours. Look out for "short-cuts" along the z-axis!
*) Best:
Playability should be very good even on older machines. This map features odd polycount in the sense that it's virtually the same hight at 90% of the map with virtually no peaks or valleys. Some playerstarts lie a little further off from the CPs than others; a better balance here would have given the playability score an extra half point.
First and foremost though, this map is tons of fun! :) Main reason for that are the very challenging bots. They are excellently pathed, know how to use jumpboots, don't favor any particular parts of the map over others.
*) Summary:
The item placement makes for defensive gameplay, the layout for lots of action.
Those who like the DOM gametype best of all simply have to download this map. And even the occasional "dominator" will probably find this map fun enough for a match every now and then.
A keeper for me. Viva la diva!!!
