DM-VolcanoIsland is an island with a volcano on it. Duh!! So the theme works okay, but what about the rest of the map?
There are no buildings on this one, just some catwalks, some going nowhere, and one surrounding the top of the volcano. Lots of long-ranged fighting takes place, so you'll get plenty of practice with this. The water that surrounds this small island has a rock for the redeemer if you want to take a swim, plus a cave that's obviously been created by water erosion which lets you move from one side of the mountains to the other.
The island textures were mostly rock, and grass, except for wooden catwalks and support beams. Lava, a skybox which resembles a prefab, and the flaming volcano add color to the scene, besides the clear, blue water.
The bots did okay, but they don't have much to challenge them. They do seem to get lost once on the volcano catwalk. Item placement could have used some work: Bio globbers didn't help me hit anything 2 blocks away, and I would rather have something besides a mingun when high above the action. A rocket launcher is up high, so you have to run for it. But once there, you're usually too far away to lock on to anyone, so you have to make the long trip back down to the action.
The lighting was so-so. Besides the sky, lava lit up the surrounding rocks with a red hue. This 5+ player map by Tom Browett could have used a lot of ambient sounds, but only music was provided.
