DM-Versai by Eyuva is that cool little low poly map that all these “hardcore” n00b clan tards wish they could make.
Visually, Versai doesn’t try to aim over the top, but settles for a comfortable low poly setting that still manages to carry some sense of uniqueness. The map takes place in a old brick and vine type map setting, in the spirit of DM-Codex. Lighting isn’t gorgeous but perfect of this kinda appearance, Versai looks and feels like all those good olden maps produced by epic all those years ago when UT launched and kicked us all in the balls and made Quaker gamers cry for their mothers. The map employs a custom texture set, which without it, the map probably wouldn’t have worked for me in this department. The map knows it is standard, but gives the player the courtesy of at least providing something individual here. Versai lacks any real “errors”, and despite the fact that the map doesn’t try to go for the above average look, the smoothness of the build conception is solid.
What really aroused me was the gameplay and layout, in this department the map IS above average and makes the standard visuals even less noticeable. This place has a very well thought out layout and can support 2 players nicely. Item choices are fantastic and work well with the environment…there are plenty of areas to take advantage of the ricocheting properties of the flak, ripper, and rocket launcher and in this area the architecture blends very well with the gameplay’s purpose. I even used the bio rifle a lot in this map, which is uncommon for me in a 1 on 1 duel. The map has puddles placed in certain areas to give an audio edge to the strategy as you run around the place. And playability, of course, rocks, but the only thing I can say might be a tad shady is the flow, it is possible to run into the occasional snag, but very hard to do.
The Prophet’s Verdict: Some maps try too hard to own people with looks and end up falling on their balls when it comes to gameplay. Other maps go for pure gameplay and forget that gameplay is nothing without at least standard visuals. Versai intrigues me because it is so humble with its own balance of the two. Sure, the map could have had better visuals, but that wasn’t what Eyuva was going for here, he just made a well balanced map. This map reminds me once again that most mappers don’t seem to get it, and it is the rare treasures like this one that we should be aiming for. Versai isn’t the best map I’ve ever played, but it is the most balanced DM I’ve played lately. The Prophet had much fun here.

makes me wish i had a few DM servers to admin :P
