Fun despite basic shapes.
Here we have a debut map that makes up for its repetitive texturing, basic blockiness, and overall "newbie"ness with a KILLER fun factor. I don't know, despite technical shortcomings we love this map at LAN parties. And thanks to some helpful pointers Paul "Red Dwarf" Taylor gave Fredrik, we've got bots in here that perform admirably well in sneaking around. Let's see what makes this bad boy tick.
Meaning "Pluck the flag" in Latin (actually, "Carpe diem" doesn't mean "seize the day," as the common fallacy states. It's from a poem and surrounded by agricultural metaphors, so it actually means "pluck the day." Nali City. Entertaining AND educating), CarpeVexillum is built out of basic boxy shapes and is covered in very repetitive texturing. It's your basic 2forts map, but there are several ways to get from each flag to the other; enough ways that if you lose track of someone grabbing your flag, your only chance of returning it is to camp out by the enemy flag and get 'em on the way in. The bots play very well, going almost everywhere in the map and even sniping on higher skill settings. I got my head picked off a couple times while making a flag run overground with Inhuman bots (granted I've bumped their skill up but still.) Considering this is an often-overlooked aspect with first-time mappers, Fredrik is due some kudoes here. He also did a good job of not overloading the player with weapons and ammo, but there may be a little too much health in this map. The flow is nice - largish, open corridors loop and connect upon each other at points. Very nice.
But the theme is muddled. It's just a 2forts map. In addition, this map hurts badly in the architecture and texturing departments, which you can see from the screenie. Furthermore, the lighting is adequate and the sound isn't what it needs to be.
These shortcomings aside, I cannot stress enough that this level is lots of fun to play. Download it and try it out if you're looking for a good fun map. If you're looking for the Taj Mahal, go elsewhere. |

It looks rather ugly and repetitive but when you are fraging and having a good 'ol time it is kinda hard to notice. This map really shines with the strangelove mod. Solid but is a must for any strangelove server.
