Symmetry and good bots make this one killer map
This is an old (2months) map from Gareth 'Ulukai' Spring. His Readme.txt is a yarn about magic, cats and of course the Liandri. I would have to write my own readme saying something like "play this map before releasing yours". Why? Because it's maps like this that prevent me from inudating everyone with my paltry attemps. Check out all of Ulukais maps here at nalicity, you won't be dissapointed. Alright, let's talk map. This is a "2forts" style map with each base seperated by deadly swamps (each base gets one) that have winding catwalks and cliff/cave side routes. In the center is the "Spectral Fortress" complete with Shield Belt and a few health and other sundry items. The bases are simple, with two spawn rooms each with 5 player starts and a square flag room with four portals. What ain't cool is the fact you will be exiting the flag room past the exits of the spawn rooms, so losing your directions will land you in one of these two rooms. A few sniping posts make attacking equally difficult. If you can get the drop on the opposing sniper you can then hedge your bets with the Armor and a straight frontal assault. Oh, there's gotta be a downside right? Well, this ain't a real sweet looker by some standards. The architecture is rather basic/repetative, and even with a few custom textures wrapped in the mylevel.utx it doesn't get into heavy eye-candy. If you liked Evil Ajte's CTF-Cryptic, this map would be the low poly sequal. |

| Bahamut | Rating: 8 | | what does 133 mean???
| Ulukai | | I'm still happy with the layout, but kinda boxy and the lighting isn't that great.
| =G3nocid3= | Rating: 9 | | Finally a map with good polys and you people are still complaining!!!!!!!!!
| Ebola | Rating: 7.5 | | A very good, very well built map. It just never "did it" for me, though. :( No offense, Ulukai.
| Blooddog_sweden | Rating: 7.5 | | Not bad in any terms, but Ulukais newer maps rocks harder then this. Ulukai is right now my favourite mapper for UT.
| PsyRatty | Rating: 9.5 | | This map easily is the most fun I've played in a while. Returning the flag got my heart racing like nothin' else. Whether I was dashing over catwalks trying not to get shocked into the goo below, or hearing minigun bullets ricochet off the rocks on the cliffs, I was smiling like an idiot. The map architecture is stunning. The 2 outdoor areas between the bases provide for 4 routes of escape, but with the openness of that area, a pursuer can still attack you even if he hasn't picked the right route. Cover becomes a huge part of return strategy. Snipers play a big part, but don't completly 0wn a base. Damn, can you tell I love this map?
| _UE_Hunter | Rating: 7 | | Not one of Ulukai's best pieces of work. Deserves a look and has potential for good gameplay, but its mucho big and doesnt look too hot aesthetically.
| comintogetu | Rating: 8 | | A nice map to play but the textures were very, dare I say it, Quakeish. Bot intelligence was good and it was nice to see them swapping paths when retreating (RUN AWAY)with the flag
| Asis | Rating: 9 | | Hmmm, yummy. The sheer scale of it is refreshing, it's huge! The massive amount of routes is quite satisfying, and lots of tactics can be employed to good effect. It's one of my favourite keepers. Only thing I didn't like was the fairly pointless aspect of the upper level inside the forts. They don't go anywhere..... Apart from that, an ingeniously laid-out map, with spec-saving solid looks and tense gameplay. My god, the bots even manage to stay out of the swamp, sometimes. :)
| Franko (with assistance from THE_GR8_1) | Rating: 8.5 | | I really enjoy playing this arena. Aesthetics, ok not the best - game play is great though; I played this arena last night vs a friend, with 10 bots, for about 2 hours. The only thing I saw with the bots was the blue bots would get stuck in a "jumping loop" after stealing the red flag, where they jump onto the archway of the passage out of the red base, jump back to the upper floor and then back to the archway, endlessly or until they get fragged. What my friend (red) and I (blue) ended up doing was putting ALL our bots defending their bases while we went attacking each other's bases. Good practice is taking on 4-5 bots at a time in a small room and then dashing for home without falling into slime.
