In Short: Typical DavidM map - Great gameplay, good looks.
Ah, DM-Roon. From the era when DavidM vertually dominated the mapping scene, along with a few others. he set the standard for lighting, archetecture and playablity, using techniques that didnt become common until months after he released maps. His stylish brushwork and great, yet unique gameplay combined to make some of the best all round maps for UT. He has since been caught up and beaten by various mappers, but this map is still good. Lets go into details.
As with many DavidM maps the theme isnt really important. A typical werehouse in the middle of the desert or a city. There is atmosphere - that is taken care of by the lighting, sound and texture work. The building is falling apart, many chunks of concrete and wood visably missing. Wind howls, water ripples and machines clatter. Lighting has many different hues, blue, yellow and red. Archetecture is very stylish. Curved girders, wooden beams supported by chains, wooden ramps supported by metal beams. Take a look at some of the screenshots to the right. That is style. That is what UT2003 lacks.
Gameplay is the maps strongest point, as in most DavidM maps. It flows like a snake, never a dead end or snag. Every room opens into another room and has about 5 entrances leading in and out of it. The space offered in the map varies too. Low, cramped coridoors restrict jumping whilst open, multi tiered atriums support jumping and dodging. Lifts, ramps, curved stairways... all work together in harmony and to great effect. Its easy to predict and find out where an opponants heading - hear them splash in the water? See them below through the grate? Perfection. Item placement is fine, as is Bot support.
It isnt perfect. Theres a couple of misaligned textures here and there and its not exactly original. Whilst stylish, some may argue its a little repitive and boring. Sometimes the amount of choice and freedom of where to go can be overwhelming. Also, its easy to be owned in this map by a good player, though thats not the maps fault.
Dm-Roon is a great map and shows you style, looks and playablity. It should be in your collection, as should the majority of DavidMs maps.

| Mxtrmntr 12-14-2002 01:31 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | very decent. theme isn't too great of course, but the execution is decent, it plays nicely and a as a whole feels way better than other themeless factory/warehouse/whatever bricktextured maps.
| BeWilderBeest 12-14-2002 09:50 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | Typical DavidM warehouse/industrial map... has all the features you'd expect from DavidM: Great flow, blocky, yet interesting architecture, and lots of little red lights... Good fun, but more of the same old style we're used to...

I never really cared much for the gameplay on DavidM maps... This one's the exception, it grew on me over time and eventually became one of my favourite maps.
| AMmayhem 08-03-2003 04:38 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Bah, it's brown, just like DavidM's other maps. ;) Overused theme, brown textures, and the lighting adds more brown/orange color. Gameplay is really good. Good download if you want another industrial map.

| theBAMNman 09-02-2004 01:37 PM MDT | Rating: 8.5 | | The theme is fine to me. He executed it better than he could have with his good archy and nice atmospheric items (birds, water, view, etc). The mechanical sounds added a nice touch. The layout is pretty solid and makes for a nice 1on1 match. He didn't need to make the layout as complex as he did for 1on1, but it makes the match more interesting, imo. And he did it nicely, since it's complex but there are still plenty of open areas, so the fighters can still find each other without too much difficulty.
