Will the real Requiem please step forward
Undenialably a wicked deathmatch in high gothic madness. DM-Requiem by Steve Keene smacks down intense connectivity with abundant item placement for a rocking good ride.
The setting is of a devine library ala Shane's church textures, but goes a step further to include a detailed graveyard, corpse filled crypt, statue decorated courtyards, scores of secrets and a hellish trap. At first the multitude of power-ups had me worried that the gameplay wouldn't support this excess, however with the Author's recommended player load of 8+ never did I regret the oppurtunity for more goodies. The size is also somewhat decietful, apparently small, this map take on new dimensions with plenty of z-axis and its inter-woven geometry. Running about while spinning to check your back and looking for fresh prey/items becomes completely neccassary to survive. This map easily rivals DM-Gothic, DM-Frantic, and a myriad of other Gothic themed maps, and does it with grace. The courtyards are richly adorned and often the pools and fountains can be used for more than a refreshing dip. A host of jump-pads, while seemingly out-of-place, compliment gameplay effectively, especially for snagging the Redeemer at the other end of an enemy filled, column lined atrium. Health and armor appear frequently but are more quickly used up with the killing capacity of the Bots in this level. If large caliber destruction was the intent of this map, I would say it exicutes it with pleasure to spare. Afterall, if you must frag and be fragged, its always good to do it in a conductive environment, and I can't think of a better setting for making gibs. The works:
Fun: LOL, I think you probably already gathered that I think it is and then some.
Playability: High polys in the Redeemer atrium was the only snag. Best challenged with Translocator enabled.
Bots: On higher settings, you'd better believe Epics comments.
Flow: Flatlanders beware, this map is complex and conviluted. An aspect you will grow to appreciate, or should I say azimuth.
Items: Heavy, but well balanced to lenghten gameplay.
Theme: A strong full bodied cup of Lucrezia Borgia's best brew to wash it down with please.
Architecture: Nothing strikingly original, but an excellent compilation of several supporting visuals as seen by linking indoor, outdoor, underground, underwater and rooftop construction into a comprehensive collage.
Lighing: Over use of colored lights washes out textures in a few places, noteably the blue rug in the indoor screenshot. Mainly well sourced throughout.
Textures: A few shoddy transistions on the floors and awful T-Port portals put the nix on a perfect score.
Sound: Great ambient effects with a sound track chosen from the original Unreal. In closing, I would recommend this map for fans of Gothic maps and generous eye-candy. I imagine this map can be improved on on a few minor points yet the question would remain "why?". This map sums up an entire genre and, in my opinion, accomplishes the goal of being a great Deathmatch map in every respect. Definatly worth the download, and deserving of a high score. |

| garrett | Rating: 7.5 | | 7.5
| Lophead | Rating: 7 | | Immersive theme, quite well executed. Although I though the lighting spoiled it a bit. I think some of those scores in the broken down tally were a little overrated.
| JKiller | Rating: 10 | | WOW, extremely cool map ! Download is a must !!
| Platinum[STS] | Rating: 7.5 | | wasnt a 9.5 gameplay wasnt that good, and same goes for the funfactor.
| Chris_Snow | Rating: 7 | | It was too Dark for my liking. There wasn't a wide enough variety of weapons for the size of the map either. Good theme and textures though:)
| Metago | Rating: 6 | | why
| Deathwing | Rating: 6.5 | | Only slightly above average in almost every way.
| fragswill | Rating: 9.5 | | April fool's day..
| Frostblood | Rating: 8 | | Good. But not a 9.5 instant classic....
| Akuma | Rating: 5 | | A hilarious parody of the Helleth review, if a little heavy on the irony.
| Blooddog_sweden | Rating: 6 | | Twrecks on a "giving out points spree".
| Scourge | Rating: 7.5 | | Me like. Oh btw... NC - Reviews = 0
| Peter][Kongstad | Rating: 8.5 | | Man great map...but to much lightning, anyway stop those rampages against NC, they get the map, review it, and done!! If u don't like the reviews its okay, but they wrote what they think about the maps, so calm down a bit :)
| luna | Rating: 10 | | great map :-) Akuma you are so arrogant... :-(
| Twrecks | Rating: 9.5 | | Any score below 7 should be removed and the integrity of those Easter seal poster children questioned.
| Steve Keene | | Thanks for the feedback. I agree, 9.5 is too high. I had fun making this map, tho. Akuma, fragswill...et al, I've got a map in the works more to your liking (fear not). Will be out in a few days and will let you know where to d/l.
| Minister Fish | Rating: 9 | | OK maybe not a 9.5, but definitely a 9. This map definitely meets and exceeds Epic quality. Very nice map. I like it a lot.
| Nemesis | Rating: 8 | | It's not a 9.5. More like an 8.0. Reason why I say this is because the lighting is too bright in some areas and too dark in others. The map does not flow well. Its too congested. The bots are tough and the theme and graphics is good but Twrecks, steady on ... this map is nowhere near the standard of Plutonic's DM-Frantic. Go and play that map again and think about it. In every aspect DM-Frantic is better. I like this map, I'm keeping it .. but I'm keeping it in perspective.
| DangerousDave | Rating: 9 | | Owned me like my momma's pimp! Great map...
| sextech | Rating: 8.5 | | Cool.
| Lord Jon Ray | Rating: 8 | | I liked this map, and it didn't take me long to get hooked. I give it an 8. Gameplay is fun, but I felt there could of been better defenses at the bases, its just a little too open once you get there. But then I like to see effort put into scripting out little original devices. Like a drawbridge that can be activated on a timer to remain closed for so long, forcing the attacking force to regroup and find another route.
| Gladiator | Rating: 9 | | You need this map! Download it now.
| REeeE{FDOC} | Rating: 9 | | Very good map, will add to rotation. Good close quarters fighting with some open and z-axis fighting as well.I love the lighting, light mixed well with shadows. Great change in environment as well.
| Charon 01-20-2006 09:26 AM MST | | Overrated.
| ultrakaka 01-20-2006 08:10 PM MST | | Not bad map, but I agree with Charon... Overrated.
