Exhale then suck up some flak
This smooth drafted map has been gasping for a review since May of this y2k. Gameplay is a breeze, regular high refresh of frames stuff. Item placement, Architecture and the like a well done. The central area with the lava pit (fiery chasm in the readme) has less finese than the chapels, but the attempt at keeping polys down and good zoning is in place. Just enough eyecandy to keep the lungs heaving while dashing for cover. On the tatical side, 2 routes present themselves. The straight and dangerous, and the longer and deadlier. A third is available from the court yard to around the end of the flag gallery, usually this will be occupied and not a smart choice. An hour blew by on adept with 10 players before capping the final capture, the choke points and long approach/retreats give the bots the edge they deserve. Bots get hung on a few edges where angled outdoor terrain stops abruptly at thresholds of the buildings, running these surfaces inside could produce nice effects and keep our computer friends/foes flowing.
This is a good map for server rotation. Not a big learning curve to master, under a meg download, and lots of fun. Teams of 4 to 6 play extremely well.
One last thing, nice lifts...

| RiDdLeR | Rating: 6 | | It's also a tired, over-used format... Let's get creative, people!
| Screamer | Rating: 8 | | I've actually been playing this one for a while now and really like it. Yes, there are a few glitches here and there and it's not exactly the most original layout...but it's solid enough overall. However I hit a major problem - ever since I downloaded DirectX8 and the latest V3 drivers the map doesn't work - you just fall through the floor and die on one of the ledges. I even re-installed it but the same thing :(
| Shock6822 | Rating: 7.5 | | Aww its not THAT bad Ulukai :p
| buzard | Rating: 7 | | The readme does mention the "hole". For some reason you only seem to fall into it once and then it does not happen again. At least on my system. At the time this was made it was a well done variation. We are talking a church and a canyon here, not much room for striking colors within the context of the design. Good map, but not a great map. buzard
| C.H.U.D. | Rating: 7.5 | | A long time ago I gave this a 9. It's still a cool map and showed Ulukai's skill. Look how far he has come!
| Deathwing | Rating: 7 | | Fun for a while, but not a keeper (for long anyway).
| Steve Nabors aka |NoVa|Slick_Willy | Rating: 7 | | Just played it for the 1st time on a server last night, I guess because it is map of the month (I mean week) Looked pretty good but seemed a little too far from base to base and I never outside terrain that allows you to walk a long the edges and see the entire skybox.
| Zathlar | Rating: 7.5 | | Oh I remember this map well enough. Since I'm one of the first ppl that dl it when it came out. :) Still love the map Ulukai and is still one of my top 5 favs for CTF. The map is just plain fun.

| Manticore 10-12-2004 03:29 AM MDT | Rating: 5.5 | | This early work from this mapper suffers from poor lighting and a few small BSP cut errors. That being said it shows that he has always had a good eye for gameplay pathing and bot work...
