Player load: 4-8
I have to get one little technicality off of my chest before I get into the review. Please, for the love of God, place at least two player start points MORE than the maximum player load, not two player starts LESS!
I have actually played this one quite a bit and it was on my hard drive for a couple months from a while ago, therefore, I know this map pretty well. Anynow, as you could've guessed, you can expect to be telefragged when cranking up the player load to eight. Heck, around 10 could fit comfortably in this. The map overall covers a good deal of ground in a very "tight hallway, boxy room, connected by another tight hallway" kind of layout. Rooms are, for the most part, seemingly bare with too many plain large surfaces and no "busy" textures to cover it up. Corridors seem just slapped into place as a standard pentagonal 2D brush, and doesn't really interact with the rooms' textures or geometry at all. Some of the chambers make for some interesting fragging angles, though, such as the under-sized pic not showing off my deathmatch fame to the world. Lighting is about average and serves its rudimentary purpose of keeping the darkness away. Bots aren't too bad, but don't perform exceptionally in any way. They use the lifts, set off the trap (which as a result kills itself), but tend to get into the camping mode by the keg 'o health, and really seem to cluster around the room containing the belt.
All this map really needs is for the author to come back to it, as the map is from December of '99, and put his enhanced mapping skills into it. Add some topography to the floors and walls, make everything interact more with the map. Many of the rooms have high ceilings and another split floor in them could really kick the fun rating up to snuff. Overall, Onslaught places a small notch above average. |

| Devil Eyes | Rating: 7.5 | | Not Wolf's best work but definitely worthy of some recognition
| Jez 01-05-2004 09:40 AM MST | Rating: 2 | | Boring. Just pentagonal corridors and more pentagonal corridors, a few open spaces which lead to, you guessed it, more pentagonal corridors. Even has a room where they all converge so you can choose which pentagonal corridor to take next. Gah!
