From Russia with Love

Every once in awhile someone will tip me off to a good map worthy of a review. This time I'd like to thank Steve Perrone for his suggestion for DM-Lemuria. I followed his links in the email and was persuaded to download the map (2.4MB zipped)

Well, it's been over a month and so to shake this outa my brain here is the review:

Lemuria Ephemeral Realm by Alexey 'Vodkins' Morozov is a conviluted extorsium of unreal proportions (whatever that means). Reminescent of Unreal1 with heavy SkyCity textures and low poly construction, this map will not only be easy on the eyes but your CPU as well. Mainly composed of tight and twisted interlocking cooridors, the use of WarpZones will fold combatants about the map and push the navigation learning curve out of reach for less serious players.

Fun: Close castle style combat with alot to do and alot of places to go. I even gibbed myself once with the Flak Cannon after passing through one of the red curtains BOOM! face to face with myself in a mirror LOL!

Playability: Low Polys, good Zoning plenty of replay potential.

Bots: They'll hurt you without ever seeing them coming. Bots definately have the edge at item collection, so if you want to max out the player load, select "Weapons Stay" or you won't.

Flow: Yeesh, perhaps too much. With similar architecture and texturing a large amount of confusion is to be expected for the less observant.

Items: Nice markers and a dicieving abundance may appear if doing a walk through. However, once the game goes afoot you'll be more conservative and appreciate the placement. An be careful getting that redeemer off the bridge if playing versus human foes for you may find out the secret access counter measure ("trap" to non-spys)

Theme: I'm a sucker for Castles. Great continuity BTW.

Architecture: At first, the map appears repetitive, olny to find that to be the fault of the connectivity. Alot of variation and inclusion of trim make this a very swank map. A multitude of movers also greets with my approval, used in a manner not to cause the FPS to suffer.

Lighting: Perhaps alittle gay in places. Well sourced for the most part without any of the UT flares or light boxes that over populate most current maps.

Textures: SkyCity all the way, with a few complimenting textures from other sets. The most memerable would be the different item markers and traffic signs spread through out.

Sound: Enough ambients and a well suited sound track.

In summary, DM-Lemuria is for those who like in your face closter-combat and don't have the best of gaming rigs. Able to support 4 to 16 players with a whopping 22 player starts, a modiker of 6 to 8 felt about right to give the game a more cat-n-mouse flavor for the frag hunter in me. When unzipped, DM-Lemuria will give you over 6 megs of playing pleasure for your download buck, err... ruble?

One of the most enjoyable maps I've ever downloaded and quite good looking to my eyes. The whole map reflects the authors (vodkins) robust sense of enjoyment with both the editor and playing the game imo. I only give it an 8 as a) I'm biased, being the guy who submitted the map (Stephen Perrone);) and b) In the words of the character Billy Clide from the novel Semi-Tough "There aint no such thing as a 10." :)

I agree with the review. The map looks great and plays good. It's a little funky for some tastes, but was a breath of fresh air when I first tried it.

Excellent visuals, especially the architecture. The visuals are even more amazing considering that the level is so large; even Epic never had to work this hard on a single map. However, the level is more of a huge complex rather than a typical, well thought-out map. Thus, the level’s learning curve is pretty steep, but manageable. The hugeness is actually refreshing in a way. Another problem with the layout is the action, which is mostly confined to the bottom level rather than spread fairly evenly throughout the map. Also, there’s practically no z-axis interaction and ammo is too plentiful. Still, the map is fun and pretty fast-paced. Definitely superior quality, but I think a smaller, more controlled level would be better.

Ooooo... pretty.... pretty and COMPLEX. If ya like more than your standard ho-hum industrial map where you can learn the entire layout in about two minutes, take the time to download this one. Dominating this map takes a unique set of tactics and with a map this big, there's several dozen tacical plans you can come up with. Enjoy!
