This is one old map.

Originally for Unreal1, Konosus uder went a small face lift (ala Textures) and other minor modifications for UT. The result is a well realized castle split by a river that emminates from a set of falls above.

I've placed four pics to help show off this map, like most of Robert Wey's work, the detail is superb. There's alot of places to go inside the castle and the surrounding grounds. A cave system connects over the falls on a sniper rifle enriched bridge. From one of the larger caves, you can take a dive for the Udamage. Also in the lower caves across the weir, hides the Big Keg-o-Health under a grate (find the button). Back outside the invisibility lurks on the arch of the main bridge and the Redeemer is in a hot place inside the castle (hint *cough*). All this detail does come at a price of polys, though should be less a problem than a year ago when this map was released.

Fun: I like castles. Almost a single player map for a medieval mod, this map smacks of realism within the ability of Ued.

Playability: Replay factor is strong even if your FPS aren't.

Bots: Not the best companions. I found 8 to be about right or items become way too scarce.

Flow: Amazing connectivity. The layout will initially be confusing, the repetative texture use doesn't help, but once you get familiar with the floorplan securing a win will come easy.

Items: Everything and enough space for duplicates without being crowded. Mostly well thought out and delivered in small doses.

Theme: Only the strange green laser powered T-port gates felt out of place. Maybe something more archaic to compliment the middle ages profile the rest of the map presents?

Architecture: It may cost a few polys, yet the author has a flare for realism and believable solid construction.

Lighting: True to the theme, torches, moonlight, and the occasional Lightning flash illuminate the field of play. Strategically placed windows cast light both inside and outside the buildings to good effect.

Textures: Transistions can be abrupt. A color wash could help soften the fresh sharp look. Great selection/placement/scale/alignment plus a few custom that compliments the theme.

Sound: With the UTemple.umx track from Unreal, plenty of ambients+movers keeps the ears open. I especially liked the roll of thunder and the roar of the water falls.

So after all this time have we become hardened to quality or has the public taste shifted? Call it nostalgia or a personal preference to the stone work that lifted us out of the dark ages, this is one reviewer that appriciates the time and care required to produce a map of this caliber, or is that "Excaliber"? Anyway, despite its age, deserves a second look and I would like to thank Freya2112 for bringing my attention to the review oversite. Truly a worthy download for like minded individuals.

NOTE: Geddy Lee=Freya2112 No Problem. Anyway, this has always been one of my favorite maps and it took the place of Falkenstein as my favorite medieval map. There is a new music selection that fits this map perfectly. The only thing that I think could have been improved is the lighting...just a little bit, but that is little to complain about. BTW, Nice Review

This is a great map; very spreadout, great hiding places...too bad you can't see a darn thing. This map is too dark. I like "dark" to hide in, but not "way too dark" that you can't tell the diff b/t a doorway and a wall. I may delete the map...might not.

6. This map seems like an unreal1 SP map with a little bit of creative architecture............... the atmosphere had me gripped, but it had no deathmatch gameplay, in some parts there were dead ends and only 1 or 2 ways to go to walk the map(by the trees I think). and how that waterfall and cliff just end like that was gay, like the gay floating tower in aberrance, only you can see it without flying. lighting was ugly, the entire water texture was unlit(bad method of making it "glow")

this is not a dm map. this is sp. good aesthetics, bad gameplay.

xcellent map - maybe not for DMers with a crowd of less than 12-16 but can be tons of fun and is a deadly sniper fun map! 20 players really rocks this one or 8v8 team dm ... and theres even secret spots, woohoo! :)

Excellant map! People complain about dead end and flows. Obviously they don't know the map. Just the tricks and traps alone worth MORE than 10 points.

My favorite map of all time. It reminds me of gramps saying, "In my day I had to walk 10 miles to get a frag." Frankly this is a great "hunter" map. This is also the best team deathmatch map ever. Send some team-mates to take control of the 3 sniping positions, while you go lure the enemy out into the open. Only flaw in the map is that the bots always get stuck in the river. If your anything like me, download this map right now.

i love it tho, bots do quite well for such a big map. Not many nice big DM-maps made for ut so far :)
Btw i love the music track, is it from Unreal 1 ?

There are some issues with flow in this map - not major in my opinion, because great original maps demand a modified type of gameplay to create thier effect. Both the other DM maps by this author - FourthOrder and Falkenstein - are gorgeous maps in all areas of aesthetic design. Konosus ][ holds to this as well. If I hadn't played Falkenstein before viewing this map, i'd have been blown away by it. But if you've ever seen Falkenstein, absolutely no map out there can blow you away like that one does. So go download it (yes it's over 5 megs, but trust me, it's worth it). This one comes close though. I really wish there were more maps out there by this author; he's truly an expert in the world of design (though not neccesarily playability, I do realize, but I think he does a good job maintaining a balance between aesthetic beauty and playability).

The main thing that keeps me from giving this a ten is the lighting. It's good, don't get me wrong, but in places it's simply too dark. Yea, this is realistic and all, but large areas of total darkness can be kinda unnerving against bots that pretty much ignore lighting levels (they can see you in total darkness and with invisibility as easily as if you were painted in illuminated hot pink it seems...)

I can remember the enjoyment that the original dmKonosus for Unreal gave me years ago. (Even though it nearly brought my 350MHz K6-2 to a standstill.) Ordinarily, I would be inclined to give Konosus][ high marks for being a faithful replication of the original, but I'm greatly disappointed with the marginal play of bots on this map. There are several places where they get hung up, in addition to the water-related areas mentioned by the author. At least a few of these would appear to be perfectly "fixable", as well. Still well-worth the download, however. I would give this a 5 for a botmatch map, and a 7.5 score for multiplayer.

I originally played this on a clan server back when I was really addicted to Unreal Tournament. This is one of those maps you remember. Beautifull.

The castle's construction is just awe-inspiring. But the map saddly doesn't play well at all due to its size and layout. Still woth a download just to see the castle.
