DM-InterGalactica (UT99)

No relation to the Beastie Boys, this map also has no relation to being good. Custom Music and textures are provided for your DM pleasure but you will take no pleasure in this map. As the map review was not requested by the author, I will make this brief in order to spare us all. This is a map that does not need a review.

AWE: .5

The custom textures aren't bad and would probably work quite nicely in almost any other map. They're fairly well aligned but no effort has been made to delineate the seperations between them when they change from one to another. The pallette is pretty much light brown with pale colors breaking it up. And one starfield texture for the skybox.
Any sense of beauty these could have conveyed is destroyed by the ambient lighting. I saw no light sources and everything's pretty much evenly lit.
The architecture is deplorable. Some cylindars and rectangles are all you'll get. Woot.
In general, I've gotta give credit for the nice custom textures. Too bad they were a waste in this map.

BUILD: 2.0

The author attempted some 'advanced' build work here. The BSP is put together well and there are no HOMs. Framerate should be no problem whatsoever. There is a mover that works just fine and it's tagges with a killzone which also works fine. There is a slowly rotating mover at the top that works fine. There is a door that's timed to open and getting out is no problem because it's triggered by the player exiting and it works fine so no points off for that. The skybox also works fine. There are 3 ambient sounds, one for the killer mover, one for a spinning stone platform, and one for the door. All sound fine but there are absolutely no other sounds which is just bad.
In general, the map works fine but the sounds are sorely lacking.

CAST: .5

The layout consists of a cylindar at the bottom, with another cylindar recessed in it as a pool of water. A small lip runs around the inside edge of the pool holding health vials. A small rectangular narrow corridor leads to the lift. This lift will bring you to the unnecessarily far away upper section of the map, which is a rectangular corridor connecting to another cylindar. At the bottom of the cylinder is a rotating cylindrical floor. Back down to the bottom. Ascending out of the center of the pool is a tube/pipe that ascends the map to an area just under the upper area already described. It's another cylinder. It's connected to the area above with a spiral staircase ascending against the outside wall. Against one wall is a door that leads to a starfield. Oddly enough, this is the same starfield used as the skybox for the ceiling of the topmost section. In the topmost section, look into the stars and watch weapons slowly rotating. Or, if a player is picking them up, watch a gigantor player running around picking up weapons.
Now that the layout's done, let's describe the horrible pickup layout. Ascending the water tube, you'll pick up the keg of health 2/3 of the way up. Ascending the lift, you'll pick up the damage amp floating in air halfway up the lift shaft. In the skybox, used deplorably as a play area, you'll get the flak cannon, flak ammo, and the redeemer. Under water at the very bottom, you can grab the shock rifle if you can successfully avoid the killer spinning mover. Finally, at the very top, you can grab multiple enforcers and the link gun as well as far too many health packs. I don't really think I need to tell you anything else for you to figure out where I'm going with this. i'm not even going to talk about z-axis, or flow, or anything else. Drat - I just did.
Cast - it's just bad.

So here you have a map that is custom textured, has ambient light, has no architectural details, a killer mover, powerfull pickups floating, too much health, no place to get a vertical advantage over your opponent, and a playable skybox. For those that like maps like DM-OMGWTFDEEMERK1LLMECLAN1337WANKERS, you'll love this. Everyone else will wisely avoid the download and ignore it's existence in general.
