I dunno if the author imported the original map or made it all from scratch, but this is a very good remake of the first map from Duke Nukem 3D, “Hollywood Holocaust”. The map is exactly as I remember it, complete with all the doors, light switches, wall explosions, and all the objects.
Visually, the map is seemingly identical to the Duke variant, and if we all remember Duke Nukem…it is like comparing Doom to Unreal in terms of graphics. Map doesn’t look bad, just oldskool…very oldskool. For those of you who never played Duke 3D, Hollywood Holocaust takes place in and around a movie theater building. You have access to the outside street and nearby rooftop. Shoot-able walls, fire extinguishers and fuel tanks exist for the sole purpose of shooting and to blow holes in walls, revealing other rooms (as well as blowing the crap outta anyone nearby). You can flick lights on and off and blow out mirrors and windows. You can even turn on a movie projector and play a smutty film on the big screen (this sentence alone just got this map 500 downloads…dance puppets dance!). But I shouldn’t stray from the main visual aspect of the map, and that is that it revolves around a gimmick theme. I would have liked the map much better if the author tried to merge the map with more UT graphics and make it more of a hybrid product than simply a port. But the fact still stands that a lot of this map is visually stale. Lighting for one, is not very good and is mostly white the whole time (and over lit too). Custom textures are nice but don’t have any real detail to them (I mean detail, not detail).
Bots play the map ok, but get stuck and confused a lot. A lot of the time you are in a cramped spot with only your **** in your hands and the other guy has a flak cannon aimed at your face. Item placement could be better, a lot of the time an item will be in a closed in area or a tight spot and you find it more trouble than it is worth to grab that health pack for that 12 points of damage you have only to get your balls pasted to the walls by Logue as he prints your DNA all over the ceiling with his rocket launcher. Layout doesn’t feel quite right because the map was originally a SP map and a lot of areas are too much of a pain in the *** to reach so you just avoid them.
The Prophet’s Verdict: It isn’t all bad and some fun gimmick moments in here, plus gameplay has its problems but is salvageable. You know what though? I’d rather play this than any of these Deck16 variations that somehow keep managing to get spewed out. But the bottom line is, it doesn’t quite hit that standard mark we all like, and once the gimmick features fade, the map gets boring fast.

| Nahand 08-12-2003 07:51 AM MDT | Rating: 7 | | About this map... another i have for long time...
... what Prophet says in the REVIEW about destructible things and the smutty fim ARE FROM ORIGINAL DUKE3D LEVEL NOT THIS CONVERTION. Get that straight. Next, i like this conversion. Of course its a SP level conversion so it might not play very well for Deatmatch, especially if you're into TOURNEY maps ;)
Still, i like it and it does play well... and it has some babe postcards on the walls all around! (yes, im a poor freak ;) I recommnend it just for fun, and especially to anyone who've played DUKE NUKEM 3D.
Now... where's RED LIGHT DISTRICT convertion for UT ;D
**** UPDATE: ... Mr Prophet... i know that, but many who DIDN'T played DUKE 3D could misunderstand the thing... anyway, it's not a problem ;)
