CTF-Atje’s Towers (UT99)
A castle-like CTF map with ramparts and towers, it’s a tight map for a healthy number of players that plays better than it looks.
AWE: 1.5
Textures are used well but the same color is everywhere. Brown brown brown. Brown walls, brown floor, brown staris, ramps, ceilings, ramparts, towers. And the texture variation is little to none. Yes, different textures are used but they all share the same brown. It’s too monochromatic to really look good. They were applied fairly well, however, with stone walls and wooden supports and some wooden stairs and platforms. But it’s a shame the ap is all one color. The lighting is good in the sense of color usage and distribution. They’re spaced well apart, nothing’s really oversaturated, the outside is dim as fits the nighttime setting and the inside is illuminated with torches. However there is one corridor up to the flags in the towers that seems to have no light sources, nor do the inside of the rampart walls. The main downside about the lighting is that it is all TOO DARK. I had to put my brightness to full just to actually play and then when I took screenshots I had to up the brightness in photoshop. The lighting application is good – just the light brightness needs to be turned up dramatically. This is the first time I’ve had to alter my brightness to play a map. The architecture is pretty nice. The towers and ramparts give off a nice Nali Medieval feel and are shaped interestingly with slants and arrow slots. The walls in the middle of the courtyard that force flow around them for flag runners look a little out of place with the rest of the architecture, however. Overall I’m quite pleased with the architecture. In general the textures are used well but too monochromatic and the lighting is also applied well but lacks brightness severely. The one shining point of the awe is the architecture. Which is somewhat of a shame since by default brightness values, you can’t see it.
BUILD: 2.5
The map is built well. The BSP work used to create the towers and walls is obviously competent. The lifts work fine with appropriate sound. There is locational sound at the two bases for the water and lava/fire and the torches all cary a sound as well, although one must pretty much stand in them to hear it. There’s an obligatory outside sound as well. However, I think the sounds could have been enhanced by a little more variation and volume control. In general, well built but some added attention to sound would have been better.
CAST: 2.0
The layout here forces one to make a decision. Do I take the ramparts or the courtyard? The courtyard approach is certainly the quickest and the walls will give you dsome fleeting moments of cover but it can be quite dangerous. The rampart route is slower, and actually more dangerous. It’s straight, narrow, and doesn’t afford any cover until you reach a building. It’s almost too dangerous to take especially considering it’s the longest route. You’ll find yourself battling for health even if your opponent is a bad shot simply because it’s straight. The bots work well enough and tend to favor the courtyard but will use the rampart route occasionally. In general it’s fun overall but with a bad flagroute choice made in terms of the ramparts.
Quite a bland map visually the map makes up for it in terms of gameplay to a certain extent. Probably more fun with humans rather than bots it’s worth the download for serious CTF players but not for casual ones.

- okey, it's not too good but not too bad either, the looks suffer from the general lighting - there are no contrasts, shadows, whatever, and the archi has mostly basic shapes. Playability is not too great, alone to get the flag you need a stroke of luck that the lifts are there...
