AWE: 1 Architecture is, well, not much, but then there isn't a lot to this map either. There is a couple of basic cylindrical buildings with sprial stairways, the floating rocks are flat at the top, and kind of pointy on the bottom. But the author did a nice job of matching the walls to the weird border of the rocks.
Texturing is rather brown, but then there's not a whole lot here to texture. Some of the textures didn't match, like the top step of the stairway was a different texture than the floor it was level with. The author could have also found a better texture for the floors too, instead of the brick used for the walls.
There are torches and a couple lights for lighting. The outside is lit up a lot brighter than what the torches would emit, and there is a night sky, so the light is not coming from there. The torches lighting the stairways could use to match the color of the flame better, which could be more easily ahieved with lower saturation. But the author did manage to add the torch wavey effect to them.
BUILD: 1 The inside and outside is zoned off, but that's all that could be zoned really. No sounds to be heard, other than weapons fire and all else that goes with the gameplay. There is some BSP issues, in a couple spots, if you jump over one of the walls, there'll be an invisible floor or something to keep you from falling.
CAST: 1.5 Gameplay is quite ferocious, this map has z-axis written all over it. Jumpboots and translocating provide for the quickest mode of transportation, as the spiral stairs are rather cramped, and makes easy prey for a flak cannon. Bots use the jumpboots rather well, and are even good at jumping down from above with or without them too.
Flow is lacking somewhat, due to jumping being better for moving around. A couple places have no other alternative to get to or from other than jumping or translocating. The lower rocks have only one other way out other than jumping, and that's the cramped stairs.
Item placement leaves something to be desired for. If you don't have a weapon, or cannot get to one quickly, you'll find yourself respawning soon. And even though the map is small, the author still manages to squeeze the shield belt, invisibility, U-damage, keg of health, and the redeemer in it.
SCORE: 3.5 Not a map for more than 4 players, any more and it would be absolute mayhem. Not the best looking map, but it has some great z-axis gameplay. |

| Jolle 08-05-2003 12:56 PM MDT | | Oh man, now I'm getting nostalgic ;) This was my first, uhm, "decent" map...
There is a 1.02-version also available here, fixing/changing some small things.
Edit: Btw, Thanks for the review.
| ChiTown Boy 08-06-2003 11:06 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | I was impressed with the level, becuase of the game play. Very fast and furious. Have to be on your toes when playing the recommended amount of players. But try playing with all 16. WOW, what a madhouse!! :) Other than that, I thought it to be a very clean layout with loads of game play. Keep up the good work.
