Yet another port of one of the many Marathon maps by the Frogblast The Ventcore project, DM-FbRoute66 is literally like Morbias on steroids. This was a personal favorite of the clan-mates for total carnage action (we used to play it with the Volatile Ammo mutator, which creates cascades of exploding ammo, due to the layout. Crazy!), and the votes kept coming back and back.
Relatively simple in layout (see screenshots), Route66 is an open-arena style map, with a portal or two to get up to the bunker up top, where there's an armor suit, and a few shock cores and rocket packs. For the adventurous types on servers without translocators, who are willing to take a little rocket jump damage, there's also a sniper rifle up on the roof. The shield belt is in the very center of the map, in between the humming columns, and an occasional Keg o' Health shows up from time to time around back.
Texturing and lighting is relatively straightforward, and the shadows cast by the columns are nice, and lend an additional air of realism (as opposed to the somewhat dated background scenery.)
Weapon placement isn't too much of an issue here; there's enough for everyone in easy reach -- minigun, shock rifle, flak, and rockets, and the afore-mentioned sniper rifle are all you get to work with -- and ammo is scattered about the periphery, forcing you to get close to a wall and take possible splash damage.
Bots do well, and use the portals appropriately. On Masterful level or better, they'll give you a hell of a game too, as LOS is pretty damn clear across the map. :-)
Polys are well within bounds -- just watch out for slowdowns if you cascade-detonate the ammo with the Volatile mutator! You *might* want a little more power for that scenario. Flow is, well, pretty darned good for an open arena style map, all things considered.
There's a wee bit of ambient sound around the central columns; otherwise it's straight average (not below).
In other words, this map has a permanent home on my drive, blows away Morbias for sheer fun and insanity, and should be running on servers all over. Download this pup, it's a definite keeper, and fun as all hell for pure fast-fraggin carnage. :-)
