Unbelievable, spectacular, grandiose, and a noveltyĆthis describes the latest release from Robert A. Wey. I have a very difficult job now, because this map rivals Epic maps in appearance, but the framerates stink. Why are they so bad? Well, this map was an experiment to see what the Unreal engine was capable of. According to Mr. Wey, it passed with flying colors. This map has over 30,000 polys, and a small BSP error that I never noticed, so that's remarkable to say the least. The poly counts soar in some places; this makes the game almost unplayable for many people, which accounts for the low score. The Playability and Fun Factor are directly related, and they do more to hurt a score than anything else does. Unfortunately, a map is not much fun if you can't play it.
I would encourage EVERYBODY to download this map, even if it's too laggy to play, just to see this work of art. I regret that we can't post 15 screenshots, because virtually every spot on the map is a visual masterpiece. I'm going to give this map two separate scores: One score is the normal review score, the other is a score for people who own the faster systems available. For those people, I would rate this map close to a 9.5, since the bots don't explore some of the map. For the rest of us who own slower systems, read on.
The place is a castle. I'm not going to fill you in on the story of the map, because I want you to download it and check it all out, including the Readme. It makes the Epic castle maps look amateur, and if I could sell me place and move in, I'd do it. The map is so large that 16 bots really don't fill the place up enough. It might be about right for some people, but I like a little more gunplay.
Custom stuff came with the map, including a custom texture package. I really can't describe how nice the map looks, how much work went into texturing, aligning, etc., but you'll see. The Shane Church package was used for a lot of the map, and there was a great combination of base and detailed work to compliment one another.
The bots did okay, but they tend to stay away from some of the higher towers of the map. The highest spire owns the redeemer, and you become almost claustrophobic and dizzy as you climb the spiral staircase for this monster. The author mentions an update to this map, including better bot support, so this would help. The item placement was fine: There wasn't too much health, and I found myself exploring for weapons quite often.
The lighting was top notch. This place would have looked good even with poor lighting, but good illumination techniques elevated the lighting to excellent. The author wanted to include a custom music file, but it never came about. Still, you do have music to listen to, along with many ambient sounds, and mover sounds.
As a final note: The author has scripted swinging doors that work fine. But there is a glitch with them online in that they look bad on the client side of the server. This doesn't affect gameplay, but it just takes away from the visuals a bit. The author may already have a fix for this, so we'll have to see. |

| Shock6822 | Rating: 8.5 | | Awe inspiring map. AWESOME looking, and surpisingly decent framerates
| Kain | Rating: 9 | | A work of art, it should not have been released as a deathmatch level. It is made to look at and absorb. :)
| Twrecks | Rating: 9 | | A masterpiece. This should be a SP level.
| Lustmord | Rating: 8.5 | | ... damn ... (but i runs like shit on my system).
| Turboman | Rating: 5.5 | | would be godlike for a sp level but for dm???
| Spaziticus Prophetus | Rating: 7.5 | | Great map, would be a killer DOM level. As a DOM i would give it a 9 at least.
| Blitz | Rating: 10 | | Probably the best map i have ever played or seen for that matter. the castle theme has been over used and is getting old quick, but this gives the theme a nice shot in the arm. im looking forward to my first map release. which isnt my first map but im not dumb enough put my first map out there hehe. This map puts innox stuff to shame... though at least his are playable... i had to turn my Res down to 800-600 and overclock my voodoo5 5000 AGP to get this running at over 60 frames per second... this is a fun map to play.. on a fast computer...hell if not at least download it and enjoy a beautiful slide show :)
| Deathwing | Rating: 8 | | The gameplay isn't all that great, but it gets an 8 anyway for the looks.
| layziepop | Rating: 10 | | Oh, man, I LOVE this map. It looks awesome, it's unbelievably fun, and it runs great on my computer. I get about 50fps if I play with 16bit colors. I would recommend this map to anyone- it's worth the 6meg download!
| Wes | Rating: 10 | | Excellant map. I dedicated a server just for all of Rebert Way's maps.
| Hellscrag | Rating: 8 | | Beauty, and an 8 because it's pretty playable on my rig.
| Geddy Lee | Rating: 10 | | The only thing it falls short to is 'Konosus]['
| blabla 12-01-2002 11:46 PM MST | Rating: 10 | | Simply put a showcase for the engine. Fantastic. Course my computer has a heart attck when I run it...:)
| AMmayhem 05-22-2003 11:23 PM MDT | Rating: 9 | | SWEET architecture! I've heard others say that the gameplay for this map isn't the greatest. I thought it was pretty good, considering how big the map is.
Download now and drool...
| combdude 08-06-2003 01:40 PM MDT | Rating: 10 | | *gasp*
| James 12-01-2003 07:19 PM MST | Rating: 10 | | DISGUSTING !!! This is the sickest Map I have ever seen ! The textures look AMAZING !!! Game runs BEAUTIFULLY on my computer. No Doubt, Worth The Download. TWO BIG THUMBS UP !!
| Smeerkat 11-30-2003 11:34 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | Lags like crazy, but this is a beautiful map. Must download.
| Ferrari 12-01-2003 06:26 AM MST | Rating: 8 | | Strange eh?! People always overrate maps comparaded to nalicity reviewers. Anyways, this map is good.
| M@estro 12-01-2003 11:40 AM MST | Rating: 6 | | to big for a dm map and the textures are egal, the the kind of artitecture may there.
| XepptizZ 12-02-2003 01:52 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | Like the archi, but the outer text for the castle is too bland. The interior doesn't seem to fit the exterior and offcourse it's way to big...
| doublepenetration 12-03-2003 12:46 AM MST | Rating: 10 | | I have had this map on my hard drive (archived) ever since it came on the scene. Spectacular work. When I want to show someone new to UT what can be done with it I show them this map. Nice going Robert A. Wey
Another work of art to consider on a smaller scale is DM-Brunel by: Colin'Carnage'Murphy (aka-Lruce Bee)
| Manticore 08-11-2004 07:18 AM MDT | Rating: 8.5 | | Thought I'd take a trip down memory lane....
| NeoNite 08-11-2004 12:14 PM MDT | Rating: 5 | | I got this map ages ago, to be honest it's always been a looker. Welllll... nowadays it's tbh a (very) mediocre map when it comes to graphics. Maybe some of the hallways are still worth watching, but otherwise... no. It's dated.
Falkenstein's gameplay was/is thin. I've even played it with plenty of bots, but the games just didn't flow. Deathmatch/teamgames. Bots also can get stuck behind the doors iirc. And sometimes they've lost "the list of objectives, and remain on the topside of the level. And the bedrooms as well iirc.
It can get hectic in the lower hallways though.
Not a bad map, but the gameplay is missing. It's not what I'd call satisfying. But it's not bad either. Somewhere in between.
| jordi 06-06-2005 04:31 AM MDT | Rating: 10 | | Let me drag you down, let me kiss you neck, please don't be afraid i'll show you things you won't forget
| cooloola 03-06-2006 02:42 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | This map is beautiful no matter what it's age although lighting is dull sometimes. When i think of construction as a mapper I litteraly crap my pants. But as in Konossus gameplay simply sux
| xFieldTech 03-06-2006 06:15 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | Wow...this is more like a virtual castle tour than a DM map. The only thing missing is some kind of dungeon. It looks like it could have been inspired by the castle from the old TSR Ravenloft series.
Definitely fun to play; the performance issues that seemed to plague this map back in 2000 shouldn't be an issue with modern machines.
