DM-Dmut-Kryo (UT)

A small map that heats up the gameplay with plenty of z-axis for all. A ‘hot’ map that is bathed in red orange and yellow hues coming from the molten metal? rock? pouring through. The gameplay is pretty good and the bots will give you a run for your money.

AWE: 1.5

The theme is a foundry? smelting plant? and it comes across well. Hard metal, wood braced with iron, brick, and dressed stone all complement the look. The texturing was good overall with some questionable alignments here and there. However, there were a few places where the floor/wall/ceiling combo didn’t match the neighboring textures. In some places this was deliberate and acceptable but there were one or two spots where it seemed as if the author had remade a subtraction and forgot to go back and re-match the textures. It’s not too obvious if you’re not looking for it, but once you see it it glares back at you.
The lighting overall was decent. Lots of warm colors flooding the level lending a somewhat hot ambient brightness. A little more shadow work would have made the map ‘pop’ a lot more, especially in regards to the many columns ledges and ramps that could cast well. There are a few cool, blue lights to offset the ‘heat’ but they’re few and far between. I think it would have been better to have them either appear more consistently throughout the map or not have them at all.
The architecture is nicely complicated with ramps, lifts, stairs, drops, ledges, and columns everywhere. On the other hand, some of the columns and brush cuts have an angle that’s too acute – too sharp. And due to the ‘solidness’ of the construction and theme, they really don’t match up well.

BUILD 1.5

The brushwork is well done with, as mentioned before, nicely complicated architecture which obviously demanded a good attention to detail when creating it. Again, there are some excessively acute angles on some of the cuts which should have been ‘squared off’ more during construction. There’s an ambient sound attached to the flowing molten metal/rock which has a bit of flame crackling attached to it. I think it would have been good to also attach a ‘flowing/splashing’ water sound to emphasize the liquid movement. The only other sounds are on the lifts which operate at a nice speed and which the bots use well as well. One large error, which the author mentions, is the placement of three health vials that disappear into the wall and/or floor as one approaches.

CAST: 2.5

The gameplay is really where the map starts to shine. It’s a small map with a default count of 1-2 which is perfect. I played with two bots and that would be the cap in my opinion. The bots use the z-axis to their advantage but tend to congregate on the second of the three floors. In fact I hardly ever saw them on the third floor. Also, one of them tended to stand staring at one particular wall in one particular place. As soon as I appeared they immediately turned around and re-animated but it was still a little odd. The weapons were placed well, none were too far away upon spawning. Interestingly, I don’t believe there’s a flak cannon in the map, which I thought would be ideal for such a close arena. However, perhaps the small size was precisely why it was left out. Additionally, there’s a sniper rifle on the top floor looking down to the two floors beneath. However, it didn’t really seem to belong as it’s largely useless for 95% of the map.

A hot little map with gameplay to match, its theme could have benefited from a little more consistency of design. Its lighting, texturing, and architecture could have been improved upon slightly and but the z-axis work and gameplay make it worth the download. If you are a fan on 1-on-1s or small maps in general, this is a map for you if you can disregard some of the visual and construction flaws. Otherwise it’s a nice little map for a few games but then you’ll move onto something else.

I like crypt maps , and this one is good . my only complaint is some textures choices i see ( like the upper deck with 5 different textures for 1 floor ! )
but nice 1on1 map !
