*) Info:

A 1.34 MB download for 8-12 players.

*) General:

A map of a little Fantasy village, that could have been taken straight out of an RPG. While it can be played as a regular DM map, the author had the DARK MAGIC Mod in mind for it.

*) "Worst":

I found no aspect of this map truly bad, yet the first thing to come to mind that left a somewhat bitter aftertaste was Flow:
Parts of this map are very tight. Here and there one even has a bit of a dead end. But I came to accept that, sine in a real village it would be no different.
Bots could be improved as well. For the most part they do quite well. They got stuck trying to get out of the water right of the falls. They never went for the Redeemer. Certainly favor some parts of the map over others. (A little path tweaking via extra cost might be in need here.) Nor are there ambush points defined.
But don't be mislead: they move through the map decently enough to be fun.

*) "Bad":

Items were nicely placed mostly, with maybe a little too much of some ammo and health.
At the rocks of the mountains around the village, and also at some roofs & walls of the buildings textures could have been aligned with greater precision.

*) Good:

Playability was surprisingly good. Considering the huge size of the map, and its general openness, the author did an excellent job at keeping the polys & nodes low.
And all of that without making the architecture look overly simplistic!

*) Best:

Atmosphere was very nice here. The thought-out lighting, and great ambient sounds as well as an extremely suitable custom .umx track made playing this map a wonderful experience.

And certainly fun! :)

*) Summary:

I see no reason why you shouldn't give this map a try in regular UT deathmatch. As of DARK MAGIC, though, here's my two cents:

This was the first time I played Dark Magic. I tested this map with version 0.91 of the mod (which has more features than earlier ones, yet unfortunately is still more buggy than these older versions.)
A mod like this lives primarily off its atmosphere, and Cryptic][ certainly doesn't disappoint in that aspect. However, the map didn't strike me as particularily "dark". It might be "Fantasy" alright, but nothing about the map would rectify it being "Dark Fantasy". (An observation, btw, which is true of the whole mutator as such.)
In its current state not half the spells and features of the mod are implemented yet. That means that bots don't know what to make of a certain thing or two. On the map you can tell such spots by a pink mana flask standing there. At every such flask the bots get stuck moonwalking.
Sadly, DM-DMUT-Cryptic][ has at least six such flasks. :(
Of course that isn't the mapper's fault, rather than the mod's coders', but what I mean to say is:
Until they get rid of that bug most of the fun is ruined for me, because the bots are not interesting when they're buggy like that. So for the time being I'd suggest playing this map in regular DM, and once the mod sees a new version (or you can get enough human players together!!!) try it again under DARK MAGIC later.

Tnx for the review. It was a biatch to keep the polys low, but I think I succeded. Hope you don't have any slowdown after the time i spent trying to reduce the polys :) BTW: The bots do get the redeemer on higher skill levels, but they don't know how to get the invis :(

this map has great atrnosphere, and fits well with DarkMagic (says I). i havent noticed any slowdown and the bots dont ever seem to have any problems in either UT orDarkMagic, except for the dreaded Moonwalker bug(btw rabid, the items in DarkMagic are placed Somewhat randomly, and vary from match to match,
On the map you can tell such spots by a pink mana flask standing there. At every such flask the bots get stuck moonwalking. Sadly, DM-DMUT-Cryptic][ has at least six such flasks. :(
those flasks are put there by the mod's code, and not by mapping. the items themselves are being re-worked as we implement a whole new spell system, which will circum navigate this problem and fix many, many more( as well as make the mod soo much cooler!)

Hey I never knew it was reviewed. Such a big paragraph about the map-mod relation and then you sadly miss the obvious: Since the 0.9* versions are buggy, DON'T use them! Play the masp with Dark Magic 0.8 and you'll be fine :) And it doesn't really hacve to be DARK. D&D isn't all about slaying Dragons in Dungens either, and talk about DSA... lol
