The run of very good no-frills deathmatch maps continues, and while this is better than most in terms of layout, the interior visuals are worse than most. So a hardcore map indeed.
I'm sure that if this map had exactly the same layout, but had a better atmosphere, this would achieve an incredibly high score. Some people will say I am drifting away from the review a bit, but I will say this. The Utech theme is overused. These type of maps are getting unoriginal in terms of visuals. This is just a suggestion: if fragswill had used the KGalleon skybox and made this map as if it was a wooden tower rising above the ocean, with burning torches and the relevant sound effects, I would absolutely LOVE this map.
Don't be fooled by the nice green screenshot in the browser (I *think* it was taken from Outcast) - this map is far from natural. Glaring white lights and cold blue lights illuminate the grey textures, contrasting with the warm red of the planet nearby (ala DM-Phobos). The architecture is solid and blocky, which coupled with the textures and lighting, certainly shows the level was designed for deathmatch and deathmatch only. Don't wonder in here expecting to be inspired. While the above screenshot of the whole tower looks good, the interior is quite different.
The layout and item placement is simply sublime (except maybe for the ripper, which isn't everyone's idea of a skillful hardcore weapon). Even the redeemer is on here, and for a small map it is pretty impressive that it doesn't interfere with gameplay as much as you'd think. I stumbled on it by accident, finding a lift and taking it up, then another lift back down that I was *sure* would lead me to where I started. I got a pleasant surprise when I found myself holding a nuclear missile. The keg-o-health is the only power-up here, but going for it gets you out in the open at the top of the map - an easy target for any redeemer-whore. I just love the placement of the shock rifle - you have to enter a dead end but if anyone is foolish enough to chase you, turn round and combo them as they near the corner. The layout allows for lots of z-axis fighting (up and down) and there are no defined rooms or corridors. To go up you have to go down and ride the single lift all the way up, and from up here you can grab the rocketlauncher and keg before dropping back down to kick some ass.
Bots are good but never seem to use the triggered lifts. There are a few lighting effects such as coronas and rotating lights but nothing to write home about. You can't slyly jump onto one of the supports for the tower either (yes I tried) - they are non-solid. Expect to find no-frills, all-thrills deathmatch here.

Could've used more reds/purples/greens. Siren looks fake. Flickering light but lightbox and flare are still there? Thats just confusing. Item placement is sort of random. No variety. Overall it's been done. Let's move on to ORIGINAL ideas shall we.

I see great potentials though (what the heck am i talking about, im no expert) the map is built up good, but the dead end at the shock rifle, hmm. and u should try making a spinning sky zone. The map is well done, nice stairs. u need some lightning prac, and i got angry at the "non-elevator-looking elevator" I wrote this because i have done a map named dm-deimos recently (jan 2k3) and needed to check for others, the names the same and i really want fragwill to check my map out, u find it at www.lah.rules.it (crappy looking, i didnt do it :D )
may more maps be made...
