A chilly atmosphere with temperature well below the freezing point of water. Thin coat of ice on windows, cold north wind rumouring around... my teeth are still chattering.
A very immersive map with great atmosphere. If You have the gear to run this map (500MhZ + SR) start downloading it now. You will not be sorry for doing that. And do not miss the -chimeara--.txt, it is an essential part of the general impression.
The map is not low poly and it requires at least 500MhZ machine if using SR, lower CPU rates may be acceptable with good 3D hardware. All the player starts are in good places and their direction has been taken good care of. There is a minor issue with the name of the music file, Mindtrap.umx, as it may conflict with the name of a texture pack carrying the same name. However, the map DM-MindTrap, that uses it, is well worth the recycle bin. Just delete the texture pack and the map.
Bot support is not even near the quality of this map. It was surprisingly buggy with many loose ends. Especially the translocator and jumpspot setups were incorrect at places, making the bots refuse from using them (missing lift exit). Also, the lifts were missing the appropriate tag (Event->Tag) and their mode was left to BumpOpenTimed which makes bots believe them as doors. I didn't see any bots hooked on these but that is only a matter of time when they do that. The bots could get all the powerups and they were surprisingly eager to do that. Especially the invisibility seemed to be their favourite !
The map flows very well. It has no dead ends and You can tell where You are just by looking around. There is some z-axis and generally the drops can't hurt You. There is a pair of these whirly teleporters which I could not find any excuse of them being around. Certainly they do nothing to help the flow of the map. Would have been better without them. The desing of the map encourages camping, rushing around here is a certain way of loosing the game. Very hardcore oriented, I'd say.
Items are very nicely placed. The ammo is usually somewhere in the vicinity of the weapon. However, the Rocket Launcher has it's additional ammo (4 of them) lurking around the level. This teaches a lesson to the RL addicts as they will run out of ammo in no time. The amp is located in a place that is a good candidate for camping, preferably with a weapon that throws the victim like the ripper secondary fire. The same applies to the invisibility as it is under water and there is a biorifle nearby. LOL to this green floating stuff. The third powerup, shield belt, has a voice signal on it. Another campable place as You can tell if someone tried to get it =O). The health comes in pairs (Med Boxes) or groups of vials. Just a suitable amount IMO.
Textures are just perfect. They suit the theme and they support the architecture and vice versa. Lighting is used to enchance the experience. A seamless interplay with the lights, textures and geometry.
The map is rich in sound having both static and dynamic sound setups. The only missing part is the echo setup which would have added more to the experience. Music track is a very good one and it is supporting the theme.
To the author:
This is a wonderful map and I would suggest You to redo the pathing. There are many of us (like me) who like to play offline against bots. Also, the echo would be very nice giving aural limits to the rooms. Suggested reading: Unreal Creature Care and Feeding Guide.
Thank You for a very nice map. It was a pleasure to review it. |

And my snow sucks.
| MoxNix | Rating: 7 | | Looks really good, and the layout is ok too, but the poly count is too high to play very well. The thing I really dislike about it though is that the roofs are very easily reached with hammer jumps and once you're up there, it's simple to control the entire map. Esthetically speaking I give it an 8.5. Playability get's a 5 because of the high node count, resultant low framerate and rooftop access. Overall I give it a 6 because playability counts more than looks with me. When are mappers and reviews going to realize the most popular maps aren't the prettiest, they're the ones that play the best!
| Willis | Rating: 7 | | I didn't really like this map, the floor, wall, and roof texture is the same in half the map, and its just, the same as everything else... Come up with some original motha fuc*ing ideas already. -Willis
| Altimartin | Rating: 9 | | Chimeara is really Great... except for bots... DM-Amon is better
| darthnili | Rating: 7 | | Much RCR, lighing could be better, floor-textures are ugly. Basic-level-pathways are a little bit too predictable, nice features, too. Nice but not too much
| Luggage | Rating: 8 | | This map rocks! Great atmosphere, texturing, lighting, flow etc. Do try this at home!
| Mxtrmntr 11-03-2002 05:31 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | it took me a while to get into the map, i forgot about it not too long after it was released, and played it again for the first time in ages in a DM game with Proph himself... playing it again, i really liked it, and i have been keeping it since then :) very nice, original map.
