Usually, when you see "this is my first attempt at map making so please don't be too harsh!" in the readme, that signals warning bells about a number of things: bots, lighting, textures, overall playability...and in a number of these things, Sphandor triumphs for a first time mapmaker. So right now you're asking, "what's with the screenshot?" Well, it's a sight you're going to have to get used to, because, for some God-only-knows reason, Sphandor chose to put a walkway over deadly acid in a TOTALLY UNLIGHTED ROOM. Seriously.
UPDATE: Some people have e-mailed me that they haven't had this problem, which is strange to me since I'm a freak and bump my gamma way up when I play for fun (normal when I review.) So I'll keep it in this review.
You've got two flag rooms over acid joined by a tunnel that leads to this unlit acid room. Bots, not being affected by pitch-black, navigate this journey all right, with the attendant fighting and auto-taunts. Us mere mortal humans, however, will find ourselves taking acid baths at every turn. Needless to say, this frustrates. Joining off through another tunnel from each flag room is another room over acid with a random inventory item thrown in for good measure. A small, tight map.
The texturing isn't done too badly. The map - the parts you can see - have a gritty industrial feel to them. There are a few tiny bugs to be found but on the whole it's a decent first effort.
But the dark room!! That just ruins the whole thing! Multiple paths to the flag would help too - the central tunnels turn into bloodbaths quite quickly. If you enjoy this sort of frustration - not knowing where you're stepping and enclosed passages - then download this map. Otherwise, stay away. And Sphandor? Add some lights in this room and I'll gladly update this review. |
