Level Size: Small/Medium
Recommended Player Load: 10 Players
As you've probably seen from the screenshot, this level takes place in a bathroom. But, players aren't even as tall as the skirting boards....
The layout of this level, is well, a bathroom!! There's a bathtub, a sink, a toilet and a chest of drawers. Each are accessible by various routes, such as drainpipes, and other such passages. Texturing looks good in the distance, like my screenshot, but when being played, they look too blurry. This however is the sort of problem that can't easily be fixed, so I won't come down too heavily on that aspect. With this sort of level, if you scale down the textures for the "little people", then they'll look too repeated from, the distance. Whilst they still look blurry, I think that the author has achieved a good balance. Lighting is very good in most parts. As you can see from the screenshot, the level has been implemented well. But this is only the case in the open areas. Once you look in the other areas, such as the vents and drawers, this is very much a different story. Lighting in the concealed areas, like under the sink and in the drawers, are way too dark. Architecture isn't too bad, but could of been better, The drainpipe in the sink is square for instance. Other small things like this all contribute to a "basic" kind of feeling around the level. No work at all has been put into the audio aspect of this level. There are no ambient sounds whatsoever, nor has any music track been chosen.
Bot AI is poor. The bots rarely ever venture off their staring points, let alone use the available portals, climbable ropes, or lifts. This is a major failing point as Unreal Tournament is so single player orientated. Item placement isn't bad, but could have been improved on a great deal. Much of the weaponry is too "clustered". You can wander around searching for ammo or weapons for ages, then find three all at the same time. Gameplay isn't as good as it could have been. I for one am I big fan of this genre of level, where players are tiny in comparison to the setting. Sure they are ambitious, but there are some good creations out there. Unfortunately, this level doesn't measure up to other examples of this genre. Mainly because it's not detailed enough, as well as some very poor lighting in places. One thing to keep in mind for this kind of level is that at the end of the day, it's going to be played on, not looked at. No matter how good looking, accurate, or how many real life textures you've imported, gameplay has to come first. This where a good floorplan, and good gameflow is paramount. A lot of the architecture is too simplistic. Take the toilet for example. It's octangular nature is too blatant from a distance, let alone while your walking on it. The same goes for other attributes to the level. In spite of this, there are some nice touches in there though. Like the toilet roll. You can ride it from ground level up to the toilet rim.
In conclusion, this isn't a particularly good "small people" level. The main problem with this genre of level is that they don't usually take gameplay as the main objective. Normally this kind of level is all about looks and how accurate to real life they are. I suppose this level wouldn't be too bad if it's played online with a large number of players. Try around 10 players.
DM Bathroom Extreme is;
Big
Gimmicky
For large numbers of players
DM Bathroom Extreme isn't;
Good
A level with good architecture
A level that's been devoted purely to gameplay
Teaching points for author:
When making an adventurous level like this, remember that it still has to have good gameplay and flow, no matter how good it looks.
Include the bot AI! The bots don't do squat unless you include the bot AI in the level. Most UT players can't play online due to bad pings or connections. For this reason, levels have to have good AI.

| 4NK8R | Rating: 4 | | Well, can't say much that hasn't already been said. The bots aren't much more mobile than pocket lint. The teleporters are nearly impossible for newbies to find, no music is included to distract you from whatever the hell you THINK you might be doing to get your frag limit, and there needs to be some lighting added to the cabinet area. Other than that, it would be a great sniping arena if the bots didn't tend to stay out of the open areas (or stop posing for sculpture, for THAT matter)Maybe i'm just addicted to fast-paced frag-action.... i dunno. Weak....needs some MAJOR work to get a better score from me. I've also seen better flow from stopped-up toilets, so, PLEASE... work on it, cuz i do think this map has potential!
| Starkling | Rating: 0 | | I hated this level. Translocator modules fall through things, the textures are ugly, and not even a low-grav mod makes getting around any easier.
| homophobe 12-13-2003 11:12 AM MST | Rating: 7 | | i searched for this map for a reason i dont care about bots PLAY IT ONLINE ut is a multiplayer game.... for online gaming playing with bots is boooring translicator is useless (shouldnt be on dm mode anyway)its a good map with good item placement i do agree that maybe some lighting in draws would help but i seemed to find my way pretty well with plenty of players its realy fun i love how he made the sink a path down hes a genious but game play lacks just a bit download and see for yourself!
