Level Size: Medium

Recommended Player Load: 8 Players

This level carries a familiar Quake 3 theme, and adds itself to a list of great Quake 3 themed levels for Unreal Tournament.

This level has a symmetrical layout, which is pretty easy to learn. Play revolves around a multi-level arena, which is shown in the right screenshot. A number of corridors and adjoining chambers encircle the central arena. Architecture is wonderful; a consistent theme runs strongly throughout the level. The level has the usual architectural features that you'd expect to see in a level themed in this way. Hellish arches, curved staircases, pillars etc. The bluish windows in the corner rooms look a bit out of place though. The excellent aesthetic qualities of this level are partly due to the excellent texturing found throughout this level. Every area in the actual level has been textured very well. The only texturing problems that I found were in the skybox. Usually, this wouldn't be much of a problem, but this level has a big number of windows, and "holes" in the ceiling. This draws attention to it. The lighting on this level has been fantastically conceived. A good number of differently lit areas help to maintain good game flow, and avoid the repetitive feeling that so many levels out there carry. Look at the difference in light between the two screenshots. A good variety of sound effects have been included which add further depth and atmospheric qualities to the level. Like D–rflinger's last level that I've reviewed, this level has no music track chosen. This is fine until you either issue a bot order, or press Esc to bring up the menu.

The bots play phenomenally well. They can reach every powerup on the level, even those that are only accessible when using the jumpboots. I can tell that D–rflinger has put a great deal of time into making the AI on this level a success, and that's precisely the way it's turned out. Item placement s also very good. There are four items placed on high platforms spread around the level that are only accessible using the jumpboots. As you can only use the jumpboots three times, you can only get three of them. This brings an extra element of strategy into the level, as you have to plan which items to retrieve. Gameplay here is very good. The level has a good mix of close quarters combat, open area fighting, and Z-axis combat. All of which are frequently used in this level. I particularly like the way the lower levels pl-ay. There's a lot of 90 degree turns, so a certain element of anticipation is needed. I kept using the rocket launcher to put a flurry of grenades around corners. It worked. I did find a HOM in the top floor of the arena. It's not really that noticeable to be much of a problem. The only other problem I have with the gameplay is the speed of the game. A couple of areas run slowly, and that's without a fast paced fight going on. If you can put up with that, then you'll like this level as much as I do.

In conclusion, this is another great Quake 3 themed level. It combines a good share of close quarters, arena, and open fighting. Although slow in places, it's a good map to play for those who can't make their mind up between Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament.

NOTE

This level contains a Quake3.zip. I already had a different size one before. The one I already had was smaller so I let the one from this level overwrite it. Having done that, it all of my Quake 3 themed levels still work fine. I have the four levels that I've mentioned above. Anyway, if you do overwrite your Quake3.utx, let it be at your own risk. I know there are a lot of different versions flying around out there.

DM Aviator][ is;

  • Quake 3 themed

  • A great level

  • Well varied

    DM Aviator][ isn't;

  • The fastest of levels

  • A level that you'll get tired of quickly

  • Totally free from flaws

    Teaching points for author:

  • You don't need to include the MyLevel.utx file with your level. All that file normally contains is the level's screenshot, which under normal circumstances is also saved in your level's .unr file. Also, when taking screenshots make sure you're in spectator mode, with no bots in the level.

  • Be a little more careful with the skybox texture alignments.

  • Choose a music track!!

    I'm not a Q3 Hater but this map sux. Maybe it's me or my system but the graphics were way too murky for my tastes. I felt like I was playing an Unreal level. :-P

    WTF?! Unreal is the LAST game you could accuse of being "murky". By the way, I still think quake 3 sucks. "Q3 Team Arena". What a shockingly original concept (note bile-dripping sarcasm).
