Not relaxing after creating the behemoth CTF-Shadar, El Chico serves up another excellent dish with DM-Ares. The best thing about these two maps are that they are relatively original, and have not been done before. DM-Ares is a medium-to-large sized deathmatch map, with a good flow and varied gameplay.

The maps visuals are subtle, being almost just shades of grey, and while the outdoor areas look great and some of the interiors look good, there are parts that I do not like. There is an area with deep red light textures and lava flowing along the ceiling, but the opportunity for dramatic lighting has been missed, and the section just looks too subtle. The interior lighting is something that I feel could be much better in this map - the SGTech texture set just begs for great contrasts of light and dark, as seen in DM-Compulsive. Textures are broken up occasionally by large light-fixtures, and another minor criticism I have is that the yellow warning stripes next to the very blue water looks butt-ugly.

Polys are not exactly high (rarely above 200), except where you go into the more open outdoor area, but I did find the framerate to be a small problem because the multi-layered, close-combat style fighting on this level demands silky-smooth framerates to be truly enjoyable. I got an average of about 25 fps, which some will find perfectly acceptable, while others will not. I found it fine, and only occasionally frustrating when fighting bots because they are not affected by framerate and so I died a lot. Maybe I'm just crap. Bots know how to navigate the level and beat me to the invisibility and shieldbelt frequently, and sometimes get the Udamage although I saw a few get hung up around it also.

There are plenty of powerups on this level, and they are suitably difficult to get. I think that a complete tourney map could be made in the same style as the outdoor sections of this map, as the jump-pads (instead of lifts which you have to wait for), criss-crossing platforms and hectic gameplay make for a very enjoyable experience.

Xtreme Rule-factor... Reuuhhhh!!!

Great review of a great map. I like this one better than Shadar, maybe cause it's more playable on my el crappuccino machine.

Great Map!

I DL'd it, installed it... but it says it's missing "SGTech1" poooooooooh!

How do bots get an 8.5 if they always get stuck at the DamageAmp? It makes 1vs1 totally pointless, and really degrades the gameplay for small numbers (like any group under 5). The rest of the map is good though, so my score isn't changed much.

Very fun map to play. And for sextech..the SGTech1 is part of BonusPack4..you really should have that already. :)

always? they seem to get stuck when they are interrupted after hitting the trigger. As long as you leave them to it, they will get the DA fine. Not really Chico's fault, it's probably something to do with the game's AI, but it is an issue nontheless.

feels a little sloppy, rushed. lots of noticeable texture misalignments, not including some bad texture choices themselves. Great layout, however, and some good use of audio queues(sic)

BBBBBBBBBBBBB wee

Under observation, a single godlike bot let loose in here got stuck trying to get the damage amp 7 times in a row. They did it only about 50% when another bot was added. Anyone know what's behind this? Layout rocks, lighting is dead.

finally he made a playable map, the invisible room and that you look out of it sucks tho

Dai Rating: 5
some very bad texturing. annoying layout. Bad lighting. gets a 5 from me, and even that seems like its too much.

I have to agree with Dai.

This is one of the greatest maps I've yet to see.

Fun, but I expected better....

Only the glitches keep this one from being an 8.
