Ahhh.... Sjoerd made it again. An action packed atmospeheric map with great flow and looks.
If You like the looks and feel of DM-Sion then You will like this one as well. The map is definitely
worth the bad language while waiting for it to download from file planet.
Just get it, You won't be sorry of doing that.


The poly count is not too bad, it goes occasionally above 300 but mostly it is below 100 the average
being around 110...130. Since there is no dynamic lights in the map it just might be playable with
even the low end computers. They just have to accept occasional hiccups now and then. All the seven
player starts are in good positions facin into convenient directions.


Joerd has put some extra to the pathing of this map and it shows up during the botmatch. First
of all, the pathing covers all shortcuts and there are no dead ends. The only questionable thing is
the amp which is barely accessible with impact jumping. It is not correctly pathed thus being out of
reach of the bots. There are a lot of distance view trigger-trigger pair arrangements making the
bots be more aware of Your location than You would like them to be. All in all a killer pathing
in all meanings of that word.


The map flows very well. That's it.


The weapons and their ammo are dropped into the floors. Sometimes they look nice but mostly they
look just as if they would have been dropped there. Being a quality map like this, would it be too
much to ask for some sort of weapon holders or decorations making them look prettier? I have seen
some very beautiful weapon setups in AS maps and, for some reason, none in DM maps. Althoug just
dropped on the floor, the weapon placement is perfect and Joerd has done his best to make them
look like natural inhabitants of the map. The amount of weapons and their ammo is about right for
four players. The health is there in easy to remember places. Health vials on ramps will get
acceptance from those of You who like to play hardcore.


Making the map look like this and still have some control over the poly count and BSP has not
been a trip in the park. There are some compromises between looks and the architecture. One of these
are the arches. Joerd has used the standard arch texture from UT package and has used the isolation
technique to prevent the nodes from spreading all over the place. However, the textures of the wall
and the arch surroundings do not match perfectly. Other than that, the architecture supports the
textures and vice versa. Joerd did the right decision on not to zone this map as it would not
have done the occlusion calculations any faster.


Lighting is perfect with flares and some light boxes. There is a minor issue with the light boxes
as they are immersed into the ceiling. Joerd did this because there was no "fat" light box available.
Since the glow of the light boxes is scaled very low they are barely noticeable. It just might have
been better without. Other than that, perfect lighting suiting to the atmosphere.


Now, do NOT turn the music off in this map. It is cooperating with the ambient sound setup.
Very nice indeed. Being faithful to my habits, I will whine about the missing echo setup.

Nice one! I still don't like DM too much, but I liked the atmosphere and little details like the trickling water. Good job. P.S. I run a C400/128 in software and had no probs.

Excellent, relatively. This could be considered a better running (less detailed) version of Sion. I have a request for the reviewers (and DickyJ) please state the basic specs of the system the map was reviewed on. Dicky, you stated the processor and RAM, but not the all important video card. Remember, the popular almost standard GeForce2 (GTS) is great at other games but SUX at UT. 7.5 BTW, breat bots and fun layout.

Awesome map...I'm not much of an online gamer, and bots always had the "z-axis advantage" of me, in other words, I never looked up OR down :P This map is excellent for learning how to use the z-axis...go up, get the RL, look down and unleash merry hell on the ones below! Well done Sjoerd :) Meer van dat, assuming that you ARE Dutch. Names don't get any Dutcher than that, though ;)

This is one of, if not the best UT1 maps ever. It has the best mix of atmosphere, sound, gameplay and graphics. "this map, is leet"

This map is one of the all-time great small DM maps. Hourences is up to his usual tricks with textures, lighting and sound for atmosphere, and the flow of the map is sweet too... Okay, so the map is best for shockwh0res - my housemate doesn't like it, but that could be because I always 0wn him on it ;). Good work Hourences.

I love this map! Great theme, great everything. Skybox though - could've made the walls black or starry so it would at least look like a sky...looks like an indoor room. This is so good it's on my current map rotation for DM.And yes, Celettu, he IS Dutch.

Woah. Killer flow, killer pathnoding, killer atmosphere. And the map feels genuinely original to me (I haven't played this oft-quoted Sion map, though). UT GOTY edition ownage material--I'd say: "include this!"
