OK I'm not going to pretend I particularly like DavidM as a person, but this will not, repeat NOT, interfere with my review :-D. (OK so maybe it did a bit in the first review, but now I've hopefully made it a little fairer).

I noticed this map on CliffyB's Ownage site and thought 'hmmm, could be pretty cool'. So I downloaded it, and for the most part it is pretty cool. The only problems are small ones that annoy more than interfere with gameplay.

First, you see immediately from the screenshot in the browser that this man is trying to pimp himself as much as possible. What's wrong with using the map name, author name and playercount as others do, and just leave stuff like fancy lettering and email addresses in the readme? It messes up my map browser :-( .The level, as is evident from the screenshot, is much like DM-Codex in looks only uses a better music track.

Textures are like Codex and Agony from the bonus pack, and aligned well (a few small misalignments on rounded corners but no big deal). What is weird are the plants dangling from the ceiling in many places, which don't fully fit the theme. Fewer incidents of them would be better - as it is they are all round the map. It's a sort of 'semi-gimmick' that doesn't quite pay off. Lighting is subtle and thought out, as in all the best maps. The blue and orange hues complement each other nicely. Coronas are attached to almost every light source, but are slightly too strong and 'industrial', smaller softer coronas like in Codex are more effective. There is a problem with the light-fixtures however - David has made them non-solid, presumably to prevent players getting stuck on them during play, but if your going to do this at least put half a blockall inside them. When you go up to them your weapon disappears into the fixture which looks seriously dodgy.

Architecture is solid and I especially like the diagonal wooden beams seen in the screenshot, adding a sense of strength and stability to the environment. As CliffyB points out in his review, the lifts are not your usual added-cube lifts - they have supports and decoration which unfortunately can cause the play to get stuck and mess up the lift. This sort of thing rarely happens, though.

The layout of DM-Agio is good for up to 8 players, although unlike David states is not suitable for 1on1s. There are multiple ways to evade opponents or hunt them down, and I like the holes between parallel corridors which are too small to walk through but provide good opportunites for shooting.

Ambient sounds are present and well-used, and there is good music. Lifts make fitting sounds also. There is a good indicator of where opponents are in the splashing of the water on the floor. Item placement is nothing special but doesn't leave you without a weapon so long as you have weapons stay on. Health is quite sparse but that's how I like it. Oh yes, and the shieldbelt is obtainable using a very simple jump - no risk incentive there. There are no noticable problems with bots, and they provide a good fight.

So, all in all, a good solid deathmatch map, that brings no innovations to the arena. I do think it is a little bland and there are better hardcore DM maps out there (DM-Venom][ and DM-Essence), but not many. I guess I'm just sick of a mapper making an uninteresting map and then saying 'it's hardcore - it doesn't need to be interesting'. Not quite as good as it's inspiration (which would be bloody difficult) but worth the download.

--- I apologise sincerely to David for being completely bitchy in my first review of Agio. I have edited it and removed some parts, but still in general stand by my review. ---

Ok map, after a while I noticed the ideas for this map seem to be taken heavily from Orion's Barricade as I noticed a lot of similarities. Including the cool dangling vines and the wall texturing.

Very good map. A clone of Agony and Codex!!! Better then Agony(witch is bad)but not as good as Codex. I can also see little of Barricade in it. UT when it is as best. I like your maps DavidM.

A good map but so unoriginal! In fact davidm has only made 1 original map, alcatraz. This plays well but why ont just play codex instead?? This is like a bad codex!

the map is ok and playes very well, however it's pretty doll to to look at in the long run. And that cannot produce a 9 rating combined with some errors in the bot pathing. There's no reason to rate this old map, but i would say a 7 would be more in it's place.

Please read the NC review schema if you disagree. A 9 rating is close to the perfect map.

EDIT: What's the story about DavidM?
