REVIEWER: Gnome and Sapper DATE: Tuesday, June 7th, 2005 TODAY'S MAP WAS PICKED BY: SAPPER
DM-ABANDONEDv1 by Pablo 'Phantom3D' Fernández
AWE: 1.5 BUILD: 1.5 CAST: 1.5
GNOME: Ladies and gentlemen, it's everyone's favorite split personality here to do today's Nalicity map review. I'm Gnome and my partner there is Sapper. SAPPER: Hmph. GNOME: What is your problem now? You got to pick the map today. You got the make the game and pick the settings. I even let you win- SAPPER: Whoa, whoa...you LET me win? I don't think so. GNOME: Fine. You beat me. Now if we're done talking about you, can we get on with the review?
THE AWE FACTOR GNOME: Do you want to get first or should I? SAPPER: Big problems here folks. Mr. Fernandez here may have put the effort into actually building this map, but when it comes down to detail, let's just say I started blasting rockets at the walls just so there would be something to look at. Seriously, every single wall you look at has the same boring texture dropped into it. You have to practically be standing three feet away from the structual entrance gate thing in order to see that it's not actually a flat matte-colored surface. GNOME: Don't get us wrong, the layout is great. The concept is a bit muddled but is still between average and above average. The theme is clear, but lack of anything but walls leaves something to be desired. Where are the flags and banners? Where are the random little doodads littering the floor? The entrance room is pretty good, at least it looks a little different from the rest of the map, even throwing in the basement and pointing out entrances with purple lighting was a step in the right direction, but still more work needed to be done in this department.
THE BUILD GNOME: There is ambient sounds for water and fire but that's about it. There is a single mover in the map, a lift that seems out of place, especially because of the sheer lift speed, and the sound is to future-modern. I would have expected something more wooden. SAPPER: No BSP errors or HOMs that I could find expect when you're playing as a spectator, then there are alot of freakin' BSP errors and some HOMs.
THE CAST GNOME: This falls under your average DeathMatch map. Bots predictably followed the paths laid out for them. In alot of cases, hallways seemed to be one-way streets. Very few paths led into the basement and bots only occaisionally grabbed the redeemer. SAPPER: At least he put down enough health packs to keep me going. Weapon and ammo placement and good and appropriate. The basement kinda suck though. Theres a couple of different kinds of ammo down there plus that stpuid green biotox weapon that nobody wants. GNOME: I love the instagib mutator- SAPPER: So do I. GNOME: We know, stop interrupting me. SAPPER: I was just making sure everyone knew. GNOME: They Know! Shut up! Anyway, it should be noted the gameplay drops like a stone with instagib on. SAPPER: Yeah, the bots just run around in circles while you as the player can just pick them off. Boring. Bot pathing needs work.
OVERALL GNOME: I think the positives about equal the negatives. SAPPER: I think you need to go suck on a battery. GNOME: We'll be back tomorrow with another charming map review. Hopefully, since it will be my turn to pick, we'll have something better to look at and we'll be spares Sapper's random acts of violence. SAPPER: I've got a power drill. We could play surgeon...
SCREEN CAPTIONS: 1) The main entranceway to this cathedral is an awe-inspiring sight. To quote a line from a great movie: "I did not know man could build such things." 2) Just inside the main entrance, you'll find more than your fair share of flying rockets and body parts. 3) The sacred waters of this pool will not protect you from enemy fire. 4) What may once have been a pristine ballroom has become a blood-splattered and charred warzone. 5) Cryss loves to dish it out. One more kill may win her the match. |
