DM-Abandoned Diner is the latest addition to the popular genre of UT maps known as, as I like to call them, “WTF?” maps. The name implies that you fight in a diner. Now I don’t know about you, but when I go to a diner, there is a nice Greek guy who seats us and our waitress arrives, her name is usually Pam, and she takes our order and comes back 5 minutes later with my meal. While I wait for my meal, a tablemat containing all the needed dealership ads that one should enjoy for the average diner meal welcomes me. Sometimes, there will be one of those really leet (and I say leet because, in this case, it truly is) table radios where you switch the page and select your song. Sometimes I won’t like sitting at a booth and I’ll sit up by the cooking area, with those circular chairs that rotate like mad when you spin on them. Then my meal comes, I always order a grilled cheese sandwich with a side of fries and a coke (some people are ghey and say “hmmm, yes I’d like a soda pop”. Those people suck. Nobody calls it soda pop anymore, and if they do they are either old or just being a dick. It is unwritten law that you don’t be annoying to the waiter or waitress at a diner. That kinda crap may fly at Ground Round, but not at a diner. And referring to a coke as soda pop is just stupid anyway). After my meal, I pay and leave a nice tip, I always tip better at dinners than anywhere else. As I leave, a 1970s arcade in the entrance area or a line of 25 gumball machines usually greets me by the door. In exceptional instances, both devices are present. The register always has package candies as well, such as gum, tic-tacs, or other small tart flavored covered candy.
Now DM-Abandoned Diner is nothing like that. It takes place in a cube, with some other smaller, thinner boxes added to some parts as cover. Inside this diner are guns, barrels, and radical robots. Serving as seats are wooden Nali tables and chairs, and tapestry hang on walls for no particular reason other than to bust my balls. There is also a big chain of UT deco pipes coming out of a wall and turning into the floor about halfway into the room. All the textures are bricks and there is a crate in the middle that has a redeemer on it. Other guns and health and even a stealth pack lay scattered about. And the place is ambient lit. There is no level screenshot of course, though radical robot sound fx are by the big robot and the diner plays the kinda music you’d here at a club, techno DJ crap.
Gameplay is as follows:
Pay attention.
Those of you in the back can move forward if you cannot hear.
The map plays like this, you spawn and grab a gun before someone shoots you first and you do your best to kill as many people as you can before you get shot up. People die and respawn fast so you always have someone shooting you from any direction possible. Some of you may find that awesome. Put for those of us who do not like to play in big cubes, you groan.
The Prophet’s Verdict: You may not like this one, although my description of diners in the first paragraph probably got you hungry.

OK, it has a good look, I'll admit that. And the custom music was good. Plus the custom object is cool(wont spoil it for others). But it is a small map, definitely for a small number of players. The flow was good, even if it was difficult to do any real hiding. But still a good first map. Keep it up, I see potential. P.S, it maybe an idea to try and fix that problem with the pipe.

| <[DecoY]> 09-12-2003 04:35 AM MDT | Rating: 0 | | welll errr......
just looking at this screen, I say 0 reason? wall and ceiling have the same texture... now i don't know which texture sort (ceiling or wall) it is, I admit, but it 's downright m0tardic to put a ceiling-texture on the wall or vice versa...
I admit I'm not a very good mapper, but at least I have the textures where they belong (or where they should be according to gameplay...) the only sort of texture that can go on walls AND ceilings are base-textures(lighting not included).
That's my two cents, the truth, the whole shabang... any comments? :)

Beginning mappers out there: this is not how it should be done
