A fine first effort on the part of the author, DM-4D employs fairly good texturing, strong use of shadow and light, and the circular flow of action common to better deathmatch maps. Furthermore, he adds physical dimension to the map by way of a time-space portal, not unlike the magic mirrors in the original Unreal. DM-4D would have scored a few points higher if not for severe speed problems. Whereas other maps sport large, open areas without suffering poor gameplay, this map stutters worse than Porky Pig at a spelling bee the moment the central arena is entered through the dimensional portals. Ringed with enormous stone columns completely out of place in this futuristic, clinical setting, the core arena draws most of the action and is a fine a place to die as any I've seen. As frame rates drop, bots will overpower veteran players, and scores turn upside down. Whether due to the cliche stone columns or the vast expanse of space surrounding the arena, DM-4D offers precious little more than raw frustration. While too many authors ruin good maps with poor lighting, jOOna seems to have the formula for success well in hand. Decending from the core of the map to the familiar frost and emerald tiles below, an inky darkness threatens to drown the player in certain death. Invisible enemies attack from the shadows, then retreat back into the murky depths of night. Fortunately, jOOna isn't wrong in his application of lighting in this area, because it is too simple a design to possibly get lost in, despite the darkness. Thus, players won't find themselves blindly walking into walls, meandering about in circles, unable to find their way from one end of a room to another. The stairways that exit this area always remain easy to find. In conclusion, jOOna promises to be a mapper of note, provided future endeavors can avoid the speed problems of DM-4D. |
