This map has it all: Great bot support, good lighting techniques, super item placement, abundant z-axis opportunities, and nice geometry.


DM-1on1-Rose has good frame rates, and is a lot of fun. The author, Mike "getteW" Savignano, knows how design a map so that you have detailed geometry in your field of view at all times, but at the same time, not a lot of polys. The 2d-shape editor was used for about everything, so you'll see lots of slanted surfaces contrasting well with rounded ones.


A custom texture package was included for this map, which went well with the Utech packages that were also utilized. I guess the place is supposed to be some sort of industrial facility, maybe a water plant, or a nuclear power plant. Lots of trim was used not only to accent the place, but also to assist you while in battle by providing a visual reference as to where floor cutouts were, etc.


The bots did it all. They took advantage of the z-axis walkways, hitting me time and time again with rockets, and whatever else they had in their arsenal. They would duck behind the nicely cutout walls to dodge incoming ammo, and then hop back to retaliate against their attacker. They grab all the items, run up the ramps, use the lift (not often), and hop from the top level to the bottom to scare the hell out of you. The item placement was very appropriate: Nothing overly done, and I always had something powerful to shoot with. The armor is slightly harder to get to than the shieldbelt, but both were a no-brainer.


The lighting was attended to well. The author adjusted the radii of lights to give the nearby walls a subtle glow. Lens flares were added to specific lights, but not all. Colored lights were used very subtly, along with a some red warning lights, one of which is blinking. The elevators are noisy, and ambient sounds were places adjacent to pipes and such, but no music for those of you who demand it.

For the author: There are three things about the map that I have issue with, all of them minor. On some of your light fixtures, like the round, revolved shaped ones, I wished you would have made them special lit and had them brighter than they were. At first I thought the light was supposed to be turned off, but then I noticed a round light on the floor underneath the fixture. The red lens flares for the towers outside look a little big to me, not a lot, but enough that it looks a little unnatural. The last thing is the panning water texture that you used. I don't know what you had in mind with that, but it reminds me of the 286/16-color days when the graphics were lame. It is a really nice map, though.

It is a great level. I loved the architecture! I wish it were larger. I also wish that those radioactive boxes did something if you shot them, some of the levels from the old Inoxx pack had things like that in it. Really good stuff here!

The visuals are, on the whole, pretty mediocre. The map is gray with mostly white lighting and the light sources are weird to say the least. The “snow” texture looks really odd, too. The architecture, however, is good and suits the map well. The layout allows for strategy in some parts but breaks the flow in others. The map is pretty small and the z-axis play is limited because they map only has two levels. The bots are pretty good, but there's no music. On the whole, just an average map.

Did not like this map very much because it is so boring to look at!! Gamplay is avarage, not special. I don't know why these maps (dm-1on1-Rose/Magdalena etc) get such a high score all the time, they are not that good IMO. Just avarage...

average map. it looks rather boring, and gameplay doesn't seem very good either. it might be the best of the three 1on1-(insert female name)-maps, but it's old and rather mediocre :/

This is my personal favorite 1on1 map. I use it mainly for sniper arena and have chosen it in several ladder matches in the past, and its played tons by myself and my girlfriend we both love it alot. Like judith however, it lends itself to be an armor camping map unless you turn powerups on (a no no in 1v1) but I turn it on anyway while playing my girl to even things up a bit. On the other hand this isnt just good for 1v1, Ive played many a dm with 6-8 people on it and it still holds up as a quality map. This map will always be on my server and will probably always be my favorite, i do feel like Im playing a trimmed down version of another map, but I cant for the life of me place it. Epic quality indeed, this map is built every bit as well as original UT maps and better than 99% of customs. You dont see many custom maps on 1v1 ladders but this map is ALWAYS on them. That should say enough.
Great work and would love to see a follow up in its theme. Perhaps more z axis? A 3rd level? No matter this map is great!!!!
