AWE: 1 So... here we have another 1on1 that perfectly fits 6 to 8 players in it. Quite some room for 1on1...
This map has to be one of the "Blah" Award-winners for texture choice. If there's anything in this map that punch you in the stomach right after spawning is the looks. There's a certain "theme" to it - you know its supposed to be some sort of station/technical installation-lite - but the way textures are used to that end is sinful. The mix is composed by UTech1 and 2, Mine, MetalMys and others in the same line. The final visual effect is passable. Then again... if you are one of those guys that say "oooh, i don't care for looks, just g'ime gameplay", then it shouldn't be a problem for you.
Lighting is another "ride in the park" with whites... lots of whites as lights. On the positive side, the coronas used are done right on spot. I like to see visual effects with lights in a map (and i don't mean ghey disco pluri-color rotation lights here), and this one just doesn't get the job. Everything seems just... normal, average. Nothing to remember here.
Architecture... Well, the author made some pillars usually seen in such a theme, and there's some little detail like the radar dish and defense cannons at the outer top of a section of the map, giving points for theme. The lower section reminds me of some other maps of the genre, with rocky wall embbeded in the industrio-trims and ceilings.
Unfortunately, the theme presented, overall, doesn't grab the player's attention. It's just another of the same, to support the gameplay.
BUILD: 1.5 Music is UT standart. Brush-work is simple-to-good (in some places). You won't see jaw-droping hability to make the most exquisite figures ever, but what is presented in this map is not as bad as "some" other examples of what NOT to do. Sounds are almost unperceptable, but are there and in the right places: wind in open-top sections, "hums" of lights, and elevator sound (not music :D ).
Functionally speaking, there's not that much to point out. It just works, and that is more than enough for many people.
CAST: 1.5 Despite all the rest, the map has some flow to it. But it has some stops as well. Mixed... kinda. What i mean is that you can expect some degree of quality DM fragging, Z-axis included, but some points just make you stop or take some walk before connection. The map could have benefited from a stronger sense of interconnection in-between areas. Still, it behaves. For 1on1, the connectivity detail mentioned can make you lose some time roaming before actualy painting a target. Item placement seemed proper, but maybe the ShielBelt should be harder to get? Also, i could easily camp and shoot near the Sniper Rifle with some ease.
All in all, the map runs ok and plays ok. But there's something there that keeps it from playing better. Download and try it yourself. |

| Vertigo 12-18-2003 03:20 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | this map is ok, not great but you'll have some fun.
it suffers from the most awful texture sets ever IMO (a mixture of mine, uttech2&3 [i guess] coret other unreal packs) lights are boring cos they are mostly white but on the good side this map has good flow (that is sometimes killed by a strange item placement) and good connectivity.
worth a try!
EDIT: looks like this map was uploaded be4 the SCOC. oh talking about the scoc... im listed on the credits of the SCOC :D
| theBAMNman 12-30-2003 10:07 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | I agree with everything Vertigo said. I found this map a long time ago and I thought I had commented on it, but apparently I hadn't. But Vert basically said everything. It's worth a try, but the gameplay didn't really strike my fancy.
EDIT: I think the absence of a screenshot for this map is pretty forgivable because it was submitted so long ago. If it had been submitted last week, I would agree with you guys.
| EvilSwanky 12-19-2003 10:55 AM MST | Rating: 6 | | youre right. I think at least a preview shot should be there... But the map itself is ok.
| Homeslice 02-10-2004 12:52 AM MST | Rating: 7 | | Hmm, a 4? I liked it better than a 4. It's got a good theme and good flow, and provided for a decent 1on1-type match. Quite nice.
