Where do mappers get these level titles?
This map is the first of a pack of 1 on 1 levels. The level comprises of a double-floored arena, circled by a selection of different corridors. These are spread over both floors, and offer Z-Axis combat. The first thing that will hit you when you first load this level will be the striking architecture. Take a look at the screenshots to see what I mean. That same architectural theme is resident throughout. Wooden platforms, supports, light fittings, arches - it's all in there. The textures are instrumental in adding further realism to the level. A well-chosen texture theme has been chosen for use. The level has a strange cryptish appearance that is pretty hard to describe. The lighting here is superb. Some of the mappers from epic could learn a thing or two from this guy. Lighting has been used well to further enhance the atmosphere. A darkish sort of light mood has been implemented well. No ambient sounds have been used, but personally I think that if they had been included, it would have hindered gameplay. When I play here, I stay still and listen for the sounds of my prey running around and picking up items. I can then get a rough idea of where they are, and how heavily armed they are. A good music track has been chosen; my favourite music one.
The AI is absolutely top-notch. The bots use camping spots to ambush the opposition. Watch for the one under the wooden ramp; catches me every time. The bots collect and use all items and weaponry well. Well, I should be saying "bot" instead of "bots" as this is a two-player level, unless you enjoy watching bot matches. Item placement is about the best it could be for this level. I respect the author's decision not to include the powerful items, like the shield belt, damage amplifier, and health keg. These powerful items take the emphasis away from skill, and more towards who's got what powerups. Gameflow is excellent, matched only by such classics as DM-MomentoMori, and DM-Codex.
In conclusion this is about the best 1 vs. 1 deathmatch level out there. I'm sure this will be a hit, whether for bot games, or LAN games. This isn't the most fast paced level around, the gameplay is reminiscent of the stealthily tactics used in Thief and Half-Life. This goes without saying, but this level is definitely best for 1 vs. 1 affairs. You could try a three-player game, but it would remove the element of stealth.
DM 1on1 Magdalena is;
A one on one level (surprisingly ;-) )
Extremely well made
A Classic
DM 1on1 Magdalena isn't;
Fast paced
Brightly lit
For players who do nothing but snipe
Teaching points for author:
Try more to incorporate more floors, or maybe a split-level layout.
Maybe go for a bigger level. With mapping skills like those, you can't go wrong.

| Platinum[STS] | Rating: 5 | | cool map, fun factor for me was pretty low, Damn godlike bot! layout was cool but a little cramped. I really didnt like the texture pack much.
| Lustmord | Rating: 8 | | There's just no pleasing some people.;)
| Piz Doff | Rating: 10 | | never played it but the name coms from A Perfect Circle's album...2nd track?
| REiGN | Rating: 6.5 | | Not too amazed by this map (I had high hopes for this one)I also think that it is a bit cramped in places, and I can't seem to get much of a flow going. I like where the armour is hidden though...This is a 'so, so' map.

| DancesWithSnoopy 05-27-2005 03:41 AM MDT | Rating: 6.5 | | Not the best map in the 1on1 bunch, but FAR from the worst, I love the armor placement, but for some reason I always have to show others where it is.... does no one investigate maps anymore? Anyhoo, the map is very well made and in a 1v1 with a skilled opponent makes you use every bit of strategy you can muster to maintain map control without losing your head. Mostly used by me in sniper arena, it loses nothing switching to weapons, the placement and selection suit the map well, and theres just enough tricks to pull here to make practicing it worthwhile. I like both Rose and Judith more but this is still a good map.
