Note: This is an old review, imported into our database. And yet another console map is saved from the dark pits of . . . . Ahem. Kain pulls this one off rather nicely, giving one of the least inspired GoldenEye deathmatch maps the once-over. And then some. For those of you not in the know, the movie "GoldenEye" was actor Pierce Brosnan's first appearance as the legendary James Bond 007 and the most successful Bond film ever. A Nintendo 64 cartridge of the same name soon followed and offered console gamers a fantastic first-person shooter, complete with deathmatch competition for up to four players. All eleven Goldeneye deathmatch maps are slated for overhaul by the creative team of Goldabar and Kain, and are headed for an Unreal Tournament server near you.
Library combines two separate maps, Stacks and Basement, into one, more worthwhile, deathmatch adventure. While the original cartridge version is about boring as snot, the Tournament version is greatly improved by erie lighting in the basement and moody texturing throughout. And while the map retains the same drab lines of its predecessor, there are a couple of features that still make it worth a spin. First is the smokey glass walls and partitions of the upper levels. Cool enough that you can hide behind them and still spot potential victims for deadly ambush, but you can shatter and explode them just like--oh, wow--the movies! Wicked. And then there's the secret passageways, and you don't need me to tell ya that secret passageways rock. Now, the bots aren't going to be fooled by simple refraction--the laws of physics mean nothing whatsoever to them. They will see you plain as day, even when human opponents will not, so keep that in mind. Otherwise, bots work well. Frame rates are good, and the map should easily support a dozen players, because of its size. |
