Note: This is an old review, imported into our database. Yet another bite of the GoldenEye project, the goal of which is to convert the eleven GoldenEye deathmatch maps over to Unreal Tournament from the lowly Nintendo 64 console. Goldabar has taken the liberty of changing the map name from Egypt to Egyptian; furthermore, notice the odd name for the map file itself: DM007-Egyptian (not DM-Egyptian). The Complex map shares this same quirk, which causes both maps to appear at the very end of the Tournament map list, rather than in alphabetical order. Just something to keep in mind after the map is installed.
I am disappointed that a map with such promise fails to measure up because of speed issues. Specifically, frame rates drop into the single digits when entering the large, open chamber pictured above. Otherwise, the map remains fluid and a delight to decorate with the body parts of enemies slain. And the map can use the extra decoration, because there is precious little going on in the texture department, aside from painted canvases hanging about as if in a modern-day gallery. In all seriousness, while painted canvases were a staple of ancient Egyptian art (heh heh), Egyptian does not suffer from its spartan interiors; simply, the map is too solid a design to need visual bells and whistles. And because of this, I have to say that this is one of the best deathmatch maps I've seen to date, but it is horribly slow in parts, and that is a shame. And that is why I rate the map a 4.5. Were it not for the speed issues, which I attribute to the original console design and not Goldabar's conversion, Egyptian would easily be a 7. Regardless, I would love to see how Egyptian fares on a fast server, with ten to twelve other players. |

| hawk of war | Rating: 3 | | Just from the screenshot alone it doesn't look right. There was only one spot on the N64 version that actually didn't have a ceiling and was the ONLY spot on the map that was bright enough to make out every single detail.
