Note: This is an old review, imported into our database. Part of an ambitious project to port the entire GoldenEye deathmatch map set for use with Unreal Tournament, this Complex bears little resembance to the original, or little enough that I failed to recognize it, even after playing through several matches in a row. For those not familiar with GoldenEye, it is one of the best cartridges for the Nintendo 64 and a first-person shooter based upon the recent James Bond 007 movie of the same title. Thankfully, sluggish console gameplay is sacrificed in these new GoldenEye ports. Yet, their origins remain altogether obvious, as console designs are rarely thought of as anything but spartan, dull, and uninspired.
Goldabar saves this map from itself by applying all new textures--which is why I failed to recognize it. The silvery boredom of the original is enfused with an organic vitality, thanks to a broad range of vivid color. Yet, without straying far from the original design, there is nothing more he can do to improve its claustrophobic layout. But this does make for a fast map--a very fast map. Offer it up on a server where speedy maps are the order of the day, and no one will walk away disappointed, so long as the number of players doesn't go over five or six. Bots seem to like Complex, especially when you try to hide in one of its many secret areas, expecting to ambush some poor AI. Forget it, pal--the bots can spot you where human opponents cannot, and will extract your sneaky hide from your little tent in pieces. I recommend Complex to fans of the orignal GoldenEye game, or to anyone looking for a fast deathmatch map to entertain a handful of maniacs. I cannot recommend it for single-player rotations or connoiseurs with especially discriminating tastes.

| Deathwing | Rating: 2 | | This has gotta be a joke....
| Lustmord | Rating: 4 | | Nope. There are some freaky sub-niches of gamers out there, and I know a few who might do something like this. It could have been worse, it could have been a Chasm-The Rift conversion. Scary.
| Noodles | Rating: 1 | | That sucked. I almost died of claustrophobia. The vent was the best part of the original complex. It should be in the original texture job.
| Oli M 01-04-2003 01:18 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | The aim of this map was to mimic the GOLDENEYE version and from my 5 years of playing the game (and Perfect Dark) I think this level is pretty good.
The fact is...Complex was a great level...then...now it is pretty rubbish. The textures are too bright and aren't TRUE to the original.
Overall, the structure is SPOT ON, the way the textures are use isn't. Not bad
