CTFM-4Centers by El_Puca

As soon as I loaded this map up, I noticed something was wrong, the default game type had been set wrong, it had been set to CTF game, rather than CTFM game, so if you load this map by double clicking it, only 2 of the flags will work, (red and blue) you will need to load it via Start Practice Game, for it to work properly, with all 4 flags working.

Well, the map, frankly, looks awful. It’s a thing square, floating in space, divided into 4 small sections by a badly Textured X shape made up of 2 cube brushes. Each section is cut off from the others, the only way to get to another section is via teleporters, 3 teleporters are in each of the sectors, one going to each of the other sectors. Each sector is badly lit in the colour of the team who the sector belongs to. If a theme exists other than some weird thing floating in space, I think I missed it. The skybox, which is attached to this map, is badly done, as the nebulae and other various paraphernalia in the skybox stick out and you can see the edges of them. The X I mentioned earlier is textured with a crystal texture from genin, and then put on Transparent, if a glass texture had been used, the map may have looked better, as the crystal texture looks awful and out of place.

Brushwork here is really basic, with the basic layout being something like this [x] . Apart from the skybox, the whole map is one big zone, framerate remains ok though. No sounds used in this map, at least there is a music track applied, which is something I guess. All of the teleporters are functioning properly (I think I managed to go though them all, but the layout is so confusing) The whole map was riddled with BSP holes as well, which made it even more unplayable, just moving around caused the X shape in the centre to flicker around, luckily, most of the BSP holes where vertical, rather than horizontal, which meant there where no craterous ones. Bots will move around, but the AI paths seem to have been built by the editor, rather than by hand by the author. Bots will try to take the flag, if they go near enough to it, but they prefer to just run around through the teleporters fragging.

The map layout is basic yes, but there is an interesting idea behind it, in this map, its totally unplayable, as the map looks awful, is filled with BSP holes, bots don’t go for the flag… but the idea is still good, and could turn out, with a lot of work, and probably starting from scratch, to be a good CTFM map. The flow was ruined by the teleporters, underground passageways from each sector to the others may have worked a lot better. Item placement was the same in each sector, which is how it should be in CTFM. I don’t really think the shieldbelt was necessary in such a small map however. All of the spawnpoints where correct too, and there was no red team spawning in blue base, etc.

OVERALL:

This map has some very basic potential…somewhere, in its ideas though, rather than the map itself, worth it only if you are a diehard CTFM fan. By the way, you will need CTFM and the CTFM texture file to play this map, they are not included, as you should have them if you have CTFM, if not, you should download CTFM and the texture before you complain about missing files – the CTFM texture file was included in some versions of CTFM, and not in others, so you may or may not have it, depends which version you downloaded.

Kantham, i downloaded this one, and played it a bit, and while i had a few spare minutes i wrote the review, i admit, its not the best map on NC, and others deserve a review more than this, but unfortunately i am not superman...and cannot review every single map here (the NC reviewer team is working on it though...i'm damn sure)

Red, if you want me to review it, click the request review button, and either choose my name (not sure if its there yet) or anyone, and i will do it, although, as i havnt played any Quake (apart from Quake arena demo version) i may not be the best guy for the job

People used to say that if a map works it deserves at least a 1.

I disagree. This map is worse than, say, a cube room with no decoration. Why release something so poor, so cluelessly constructed?
