OH NOES!!!11 THE SKY BE FALLING!!!111

No, don’t worry it’s not, but I really wish the skybox would drop out of this map!
Guy that requested this review wasn’t the author, so either

a) He didn’t try the map
b) He tried it, and realised it would be the ultimate torture for a lazy assed reviewer such as myself


Kid Ying eventually did the very successful CTF-Bedrooms. Of course, every mapper has to start somewhere, and I guess this was one of his starting points.

Now, the map looks damn cool on that level screenshot, which is how it looks in the editor, but it looks nothing like that in my game! Possibly I have my brightness too high or too low, I don’t know, but a good map should be able to be played with most brightnesses anyway.

Ok basically, there’s this floating thing in the sky, and the sky is moving at like 10 million killamiles per second. The floating platform is held up by like 4 flames glued onto each available surface. 3 Ways to the flag, either

1) run straight across the platform
2) go underneath and have to do lots of jumps and stuff (not real BT, just jump from one platform to the next)
3) a conveniently placed floating moving platform that goes to the other base

At each base there are 2 lift, one goes to a platform with a sniper (read : camping mayhem alert) and the other goes to one with a redeemer (read : power weapons should not be so readily available)

Textures are aligned, but boring and repetitive.
There’s a pic of the author at each base
Brushes are squares and very basic 2d shape editor stuff
Lighting is…bright…the author did put red lights in red base and blue lights in blue base though, so I guess that’s something
Lots of movers, attach movers too, which is cool, they all work. Except that lift jumping may cause you to hit your head on the invisible ceiling.
Pathing has been done, but bots are pretty lazy
It looks like it would be a crazy map to try online, but I don’t think I could handle that skybox

I don’t know what drivers/video settings the author had when he took that screenshot, as it does, look very cool, however, this isn’t how it turns out on my machine, so unfortunately, I rate it like I see it.

Conclusion

Crazy Map, try it for a few mins of fun, nothing special, maybe you can get the cool skybox working, I can’t, sorry. Don't complain about my low review score if you do get the nice skybox effect, I didn't so this is how i saw the map, yes, looking at the maps pic, it does look quite cool, and may have gone up in score for AWE if it had of worked, unfortunately, it doesnt seem to work on some drivers/brightnesses/settings

EDIT - Thanks of Hellscrag, i now have the correct graphics settings. You will need VolumetricLighting=True to play this map, I was correct about the fact that the skybox would look cool in this map with the correct settings, and it does look very nice, however, i don't think that really a player should have to alter his/her graphics settings to get the map to look at least half decent.

I have updated the maps score now that i have seen the map how the author intended it to be, the skybox is still crazy and the fast moving textures will probably give you a headache, its cool with volumetric lighting, but skyboxes are not everything, even when they are whats in your screen 50% of the time.

This map isn't very good but it has a few nice things...I like the custom music a lot. The bots only take the middle path however making it VERY easy to score a capture.

Ice-Dancer, I think the setting you're looking for is VolumetricLighting?

By and large there's no need for an UT'er playing on modern equipment to have fog switched off.

EDIT: No problem Ice-Dancer, just doing my civic duty as a citizen of the Nali City. :D

HEY! on my machine I got FOG switched ON, but I don't see it in any map!!!

(in UED however I do see the fog!)
I heard there is a thing in the INI that have to be changed

EDIT:
AAAH! that's where it is! ive been looking for that but couldn't find it.
that sucks! the fog looks nice but they disabled it by default! pukes....

In advanced options in Ued under edit, look for your playing software, usually it's Direct 3D, and taht renderer has Volumetricfog set to false by default.

Yup, skybox is most striking about the map. I once saw a screen on a site I thought, I must have taht map!

But on slow machines, volumetricfog can really dowbn the FPS. And there are better ways to create taht effect without fog I've recently tried.

EDIT; Heej, Solar, I think that's a pretty farfetched conclusion, but it does seem that one or another has inspired eachother. Nonetheless, it's not a really impressive skybox, techniqly speaking. It just ahs a nice effect.

and it gets much to crowed in the center
I think this map i best played with 4 players
