AWE: 0.5 BUILD: 0.5 CAST: 0.5
ADRENALINE RATING: 1/5 RECOMMENDED NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 10-16
GNOME: Hey everybody! We've got an interesting map for you today. SAPPER: Interesting? Interesting! Seriously dude, between the numbskull who made this map, the marblehead who requested a review of it, and the brainfart who rated it a 10 [WHICH HAS SINCE BEEN REMOVED], I think we've got enough noggin-knockin' stupidity to go around without adding you to the scene Gnome. GNOME: C'mon pardner! Get into the spirit of thangs. Wanna see my new bunny? SAPPER: Wanna see my coyote? Get away from me!
THE STORY SAPPER: Oh I can't wait to hear the story you've come up with for this one... GNOME: Umm...okay. Well I guess one day a couple of farmers got a little bit high and a little bit drunk and decided to build a fence. So they went to the lumber store which comes after the general store and before the muffin store and asked for several hundred thousand 2x4's and half a million nails. Then they tried to build a fence but it really didn't turn out that well so they went back to their fields to harvest their jelly beans. SAPPER: Now THAT'S funny!
THE AWE FACTOR GNOME: I can't really tell if this was meant to be a mini-me map or not. At this point, I can really only guess what this guy was thinking about. SAPPER: There was a grand total of three different textures to this map. There were maybe four brushes. And there is not a single light placement anywhere. One would think that if this guy would bother to place over 800 pathnodes for bots to follow, he'd be able to put in some freakin' lighting. It should be noted that the lighting in this map was not built, it is simply the standard lighting you get when you're making the map in Ued.
THE BUILD GNOME: If hurricane Katrina hits this thing, I don't think it's gonna hold up. SAPPER: I'm still trying to fathom why somebody would actually build something like this. It's almost like someone was playing Jenga. GNOME: I like to look on the bright sid eof things...no HOMs. SAPPER: I like to point out the flaws in people. No music, no ambient sound, no real need for zoning I guess but still.
THE CAST GNOME: There are about 900 pathnodes in this map for bots to follow. Although the effort was there to try to gets the bots to go lots of different places, the map wasn't actually tested so there are problems when bots follow certain paths and end up trying to squeeze their bodies through a gap that's just too small and they get stuck and go into spasms. SAPPER: This guy knows how to make a CTF map but he doesn't know HOW to map a CTF map...or any other kind of map for that matter.
OVERALL GNOME: I could forgive blito3 for one map. But I'm kind of wary about when we get to the other 24 maps he has uploaded. SAPPER: I've had more excitement watching the static on my TV than playing this map. Someone should douse that fence in gasoline and set it aflame. At least then it would have a cool effect. |

| SkaarjMaster 08-31-2005 09:27 AM MDT | Rating: 2.5 | | With all of blito3's extremely better maps out there, why you guys chose to review this one is beyond me. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 2-4 years, you would know this.;)
Yes, this one is bad (not much in the way of gameplay, lighting, and texture variety and certainly a few bot path could have been eliminated), but please check out his other maps.
| Deathbliss 08-31-2005 04:16 PM MDT | | When reveiwing a map like this you have to use a little known function of your brain called the imagination. That's the key to understanding things like this. I've played a lot of this author's other levels and the more maps of his or hers I ran across (one I think even managed to make it to my keeper list), the more I began to understand what was going on. This mapper is using their imagination, and expecting the player to do the same, in an effort to deliver a theme that at least when the map was created they didn't have the talent to make it look more like what they were picturing in their mind's eye. You have to undertsand that not all mappers are like DavidM, or Hournces, or GUI, or Desperado, or (insert famous author here). Not all of them can take some grand idea in their mind and translate it out to some artistic medium completely intact. I happen to be one of these people - if I could get what I see in mind directly into UnrealED It'd probably be Ownage work. But the sad fact of the matter is that I can't, and others suffer the same affliction. You have to have some leeway for the less talented but very imaginative mappers out there like us. If you can't manage that, and I direct this to the reviewer(s), the you shouldn't review maps. That said your reveiw appears to detail all the flaws rather comprehensively and in a fairly non-negative way. That's good - you just forgot to point out with equal comprehension the creative aspects of this map. I have at this point in time 14.52 gigs worth of custom maps between UT and UT 2004 - all of which I have played - and I've removed at least half as many over last few the years. I have never seen a level like this - not once - so saying it's unique is certainly the truth. That's one thing you should have pointed out in your review. Remember the flaws in a map are only half of a level's story! - Deathbliss
| Gnome and Sapper 08-31-2005 05:10 PM MDT | | Hey, don't get me wrong, I never said I didn't like it. Playing it was no doubt a unique experience...refreshing even. In general, I use the Gnome and Sapper characters to provide a level of humor to my reviews and it is not my intention of upsetting the general population.
One of the reasons I review the maps that I review is because there is a request for it (like this one). The other reason is because my goal is to eventually have all the maps reviewed whether there are requests for them or not.
At any rate, I do try to be objective. Gnome is generally for providing the review portion in an objective manner, and Sapper just tries to fun fun of everything. Sapper is just supposed to be funny.
Keep in mind that I do constantly check comments on my map reviews to see what people say about them so that I can provide a better review. Nobody's perfect when they start out, whether it's reviewing maps or making maps or understanding nuclear physics.
I hope the someday people will see past the generic review format and see past the Gnome and Sapper characters and realize that my reviews really aren't all that different from anyone else's. It just looks a little different.
| ctph 08-31-2005 07:03 PM MDT | | This map: http://nalicity.beyondunreal.com/map_hub.php?mid=312 is the "reworked" version, basically the same but with extra coloured banners... The reviewer liked it better then, but that was an oldschool NC2 review!
| FraGnBraG 09-01-2005 12:04 PM MDT | | well put deathbliss -- i was going to give a big blito3 shpeal but you beat me to it, LOL! there is only _one_ blito3 (there's also a related blito4, for those that don't know...)
...good or bad have a laugh and move along. you usually can't take B3 all that seriously, a lot of his maps don't fit into a schema, i think this is one of those -- reviewing this old map seems a tad silly to me...
now if you go have a match in "hoober-bloob express", "tiny village of death", "lostmarines" or (my fav) "24h-shipyards" which btw, won a big UPG contest over other supposed "high-skill" mappers - just look what B3 did in ONE DAY! phear those skillz!
It's not about mapping skills anyways, it's motivation and effort (and being sober) in a nutshell blito3 is "pie in the face" of ut-mapping "convention" --
just look at "island of the skull-devils" in the ed, LOL! go ahead, critize that!!! and then have a laugh along with blito!
lastly, i quote (blito3 from some time ago) "why would i spend more than a few hours making a map? it's either going to suck, or it'll be great -- at least i didn't waste a month making a map that sucked ..." hmm... i guess you've just been blito'd G&S

| AnArKi_99 09-08-2005 07:11 PM MDT | | gnome&sapper if your going to add "characters for humor" at least make it funny.
| SolarImplosion 09-14-2005 06:19 PM MDT | | nobody likes my maps, and nobody cares, nor do i care.
one person doesnt like this map, everyone cares because of the person who made it.
i think some folks need to lighten up a whole lot, its just a map, and i dont care who made it i think its extremely ugly and i also think it doesnt play that great. everyone makes bad maps at one point in time anyways, the reviewer is just doing his job.
| hawkwind 09-15-2005 08:18 AM MDT | Rating: 5 | | the bad. the textures, such as they were, didn't need to be so hidious. the good. great layout and item placement. the in between: there is no way to train bots to play this layout. just put some real, un-stretched textures on this wood, and this would be a great level
