AS-Airportterror
AWE: 1.0 BUILD: 1.0 CAST: 1.0
ADRENALINE RATING: 2/5 RECOMMENDED NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 6-10
GNOME: Have I ever mentioned that I hate to fly? SAPPER: Why? Is it because of you have to rely on complex technology to get you safely from point A to point B? Is it because of terrorists? Is it because that in the last month, 12 different aircraft have had their obituaries published on page 3 of the local newspaper? GNOME: No. It's more like me being 20,000 feet above ground. I'm just not really comfortable with all that. I don't like being in a situation that I can't easily get out of. SAPPER: You mean like writing this review? GNOME: Exactly.
THE STORY GNOME: It was February 30th, 2007 when all Hell broke loose at a tiny airport in western Pennsylvania. From the evidence forensic investigators were able to gather, a group of about 6 men assaulted the airport in an attempt to steal a Boeing 737 that was due for maintenance. Several dozen security guards and law enforcement officers were killed in the unexpected attack. Fortunately, the terrorists where never able to get the plane off the ground because powering up the airliners overloaded the turbine engines causing them to explode killing all six members of the terrorist group. It is believed that the terrorists were part of a faction known as the Foot and worked for a mysterious masked leader nicknamed Shredder. We are still unsure of what the Foot's motives are but some believe that the Foot have something against the color green and are trying to rid the world of it. SAPPER: Although mildly funny Gnome, that is a really, really, really stupid story. GNOME: Didn't you get the e-mail? They're supposed to be stupid so that readers will wonder about them. It's all a big marketing ploy.
THE OBJECTIVES SAPPER: Although human players can more or less figure out how to win this scenario, usually well within the 20 minutes provided, the bots run around like ants doing nothing. Your objectives are as follows. 1. Jump down into the sewer system and waste all of your ammo trying to destroy some cable lines that will cut power and disable a bunch of hydralic doors inside the airport. Make sure you bring lots of guns and ammo because the cable lines are really picky and must be hit at just the right place for the bloody things to blow up. 2. Get into the elevator which will no doubt jam up with a bunch of bots trying to get in with you, and find the 'engeneering room' where you can open some doors that weren't affected by the sudden power loss. 3. Get into the 'paggage room' and find a dark corner to hide in where your presence will allow the 'hanger doors' to open granting you access to the airplane. 4. Blow up the turbines, but only if you want to, and die in the ensuing explosions. 5. Get inside the plane and find your way to the cockpit where you can take control over a now useless plane.
THE AWE FACTOR GNOME: You enjoyed that didn't you? SAPPER: You know me too well. GNOME: Is there anything you liked about the map? SAPPER: ...Is that a trick question? GNOME: Don't you know it's rude to answer a question with another question? SAPPER: Yeah, because you should talk... GNOME: Well...whatever. Anyway, as odd as it may sound after having actually played the map, I'm quite impressed with the lighting. Although dark with some totally black areas, it did help to hide the fact that the textures for the most part were absolutely hideous with no obvious effort to properly align them. SAPPER: Yeah, the windows and glass were inconsistent too using several different kinds of glass and window textures. And I don't care what anyone says, no airport can install such large windows capable of withstanding the torment of 10 people blasting it with rocket launchers. Nest time I shoot at a window that isn't either underwater or out in space...I expect it to shatter.
THE BUILD GNOME: Here's some good news. Just about anyone can create a replica of that plane. Despite it being a rather nice model compared to the rest of the map, it is built completed out of rather simple shapes. The entire map in fact in entirely BSP modeled without the use of any external modeling program or any imported brushes. I understand that's almost unheardof now, but five years ago, I imagine everyone was pretty new to map making. SAPPER: Yeah, that probably explains why you could get caught on nothing and get stuck in spectator mode. It would probably also explain the oh so numerous HOMs mostly found in corners or gaps between brushes. Zoning was fine, triggers worked once you figured out how to trigger them. Movers all functioned. But what's with the sound? some of the sound effects just don't make any sense at all.
THE CAST GNOME: I think this is the part where I insert some sort of excuse to leave the room when I really have no contribution to make. SAPPER: Oh come on! GNOME: Hey, my mother always told me that if I have nothing nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all. SAPPER: Oh good, nothing to interrupt me then. Testing this map on a local server has proven that it actually plays quite well with real people and the framerates weren't a problem. Needless to say, I was shocked. Initially, Gnome and I went at this map with bots and it was a real nightmare. We almost convinced ourselves not to do this review but then we changed our minds. GNOME: Nobody cares. Talk about the map! SAPPER: I'm getting there. So, these bots had their brains vacuum-sucked out of their skulls and then dropped in the map to see if they could figure out where to go and what to do let alone walk in a straight freakin' line. Item placement was average but flow left a great deal to be desired. Even after playing it repeatedly, I still occasionally made a wrong turn and hard to backtrack.
OVERALL GNOME: I think this map is actually pretty good for when it was made. The original author probably intended it to be played online anyway. Assault maps are generally best played without purposes for obvious reasons. SAPPER: What about those people who don't have the internet? GNOME: Well...then I suppose they wouldn't have been able to download the map then, would they? SAPPER: We're going to go now everyone. Gnome may or may not be around tomorrow. |

| (NRA)_Noodle 07-13-2003 10:29 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | I agree with Jelly here, the map is to small. I found the map quite easy to complete when I had bots on as they all kept in the same place. The plane looks good though but for an Assualt needs more objectives and to be longer.

| rbrohammer 10-07-2004 10:00 AM MDT | Rating: 4.5 | | Man, if would of pathed the bots correctly, this would be one fun map. I play it online, mostly for that reason. Better luck with the next one.
| Kantham 08-30-2005 11:13 AM MDT | | Right.....
This map is so old.....
| Manticore 08-30-2005 06:11 PM MDT | Rating: 4 | | As far as AS maps go this one had a good concept, it was a shame that the map itself was so flawed. Below average as I remember it....
| Wesley "Boreas" van Dijk 10-13-2005 04:58 PM MDT | Rating: 6 | | Dude, a 1 is for maps that either aren't playable, or are a cube. Give the guy some credit for the time spent on it.
| Daeglin 10-24-2005 02:37 PM MDT | Rating: 5.5 | | I had fun playing this map, not a bad idea, even though the brushes could use more work, and the bots were horible on the defending team
