In Short: A very good remake of a classic UT map

You gotta hand it to Teddie, he does make good remakes.
in this case, we have Peak. With it's twisting wooden platforms and tight, claustrophobic gameplay the original was one of unreal tournament's most tell-tale areans. While it's layout was not for everyone it was certainly a decent enough enough map with a unique theme.

Now we have it for the new game. Not much has changed - the layout is exactly the same as far as I can tell and the original's look has been kept. Yeah, it's more high poly and looks pretty nice - seperate wood planks and all. The lighting is very nice, professionaly done and well crafted. Nice little details such as wind chimes that actually chime are abundant here and are much appresiated. They help give character to a map that has always had a unique touch to it.

I have to say that the gameplay doesn't really suit UT2004 and the map feels larger than it did before. The rooms are more spacious and the wooden maze that clung to the brick walls of the monastry seem easier to navigate.

It's constructed nicely enough, and bots are done well. Emitters are used without error. Weapon placement is true to the original.

What more can I say? If this was a original map it might be rated a bit higher but as it is there are no problems and nothing really bad.

What S. Teddy says.... and I'm lowering my rating owing to (my) new clonage policy.

definately a quality remake of an old map... personally i like this version better than the original, as it's less claustrophobic in many areas... would be great on a lan with friends...

I thought the FOV or somthing is off on this map
feels like i'm to close to the ground or somthing,it just did'nt do it for me.
It's good but not the same feel as it could of been from ut,just isnt redone right for new engine somehow.
And the added opening by the old jumboots, should of not of have been added possibly.

A faithful tribute, with graphics worthy of UT2004, and gameplay just as amazing as the original as well.

10 to make up for that ridiculous 2.5

Stunning remake, obviously shown through the ownage status it obtained. Wider walkways make it less annoying and therefore better.

Very awesome map! It was excellently remade into a solid UT2k4 level. The paths are wider, allowing double dodging better. My only problem was with the area where the Ripper used to be. Those inner rooms could use some minor work. Other than that, excellent job! I love the music for this map (the original's).

It's a quality remake with quality gameplay. I'm no fan of remakes so I really can't give this map the kind of score it would deserve if it were origional.

Actually I only play CTF and JB. But I love remakes of good UT99-maps. And DM-Peak is doubtless one of the best originals.

Well done...

ive really never liked this map for many many reasons. mostly cause there were bunch of newbs hoppin around and spawn camping on instagib etc. but all in all the re-make of this map is excellent. still reminds me of these newbs but hey.... this is one of the best remakes ive ever seen. Another well job to Teddie, Map maker of Deck-17 ;)

I never liked the original much and even though this has differences I still don't like it - there still isn't enough room to move and it doesn't flow v.well.

Technically speaking, it is nicely done tho..

THE GOOD:

It's a Classic. As most UT owners know, Peak Monastery was one of the most distinctive maps in the original Unreal Tournament Deathmatch roster. Fortunately for long-time UT fans, TDB-Peak doesn't disappoint; like EternalCaves-Classic, this is a faithful, technically accomplished remake that reminds you exactly why you burned so many hours on the original in the first place.

Detail. The small details are what really make push this map into A-list status - a banquet table at the top of the monastery, complete with Holy Book of Nali and a platterful of ammo; a scroll-based version of the hidden message from Deck-17; the little stained-glass bases used for the weapons. Even beyond the basic layout, the care placed into this map shines through at almost every opportunity.

THE BAD:

Nothing Genuinely New. If you're opposed to the concept of remakes in general, nothing here will convince you otherwise.

THE VERDICT:

A meaty, accomplished conversion of a UT stalwart.
