Map Description"Deep in the middle of the Forest of Draor lies the Draor canyon. Abandoned for centuries and worn down by the eternal rain, the old nali castle ruins host one of the tournaments' first onslaught matches without vehicles."

My first released UT2k4 map so it's not amazing cuz I've got to practice with making my own meshes and stuff. Also have pretty limited time to make the map so I missed out some stuff I would have liked to add (wanted to make completely custom meshes for the bases etc. and plants)
Also, just as a warning this map is afaik the second (roughly) onslaught map with no vehicles. Just so you don't get a fright when you load the map up :p

Two words: Melee Onslaught. Well, this is Bot_40's first map with the new engine, and I say he did quite well. With the fresh gametype, there's a lot of options to be built, and ONS-Draor is one of the first Onslaught maps without vehicles. This map really produces that kick-ass chaotic carnage we all look for, and frankly I haven't seen many ONS maps that have done this yet, and it's not surprising that it has come from Bot considering his track record in UT.

The map is small by regular Onslaught standards, which is definatly not a bad thing. With 4 nodes (2 in each half), in the map, the first 2 can be built quickly, and the fighting begins. While you can attack the enemies core with just those 2 nodes, getting to it is the real treat. Though slightly on the spammy side, the rocket launcher is what slows you down, plus the narrowness of the map, oh yeah, and that ravine you'll fall into at least once. Your weapon of choice better be a flak cannon or rocket launcher. The varying levels of the routes do provide some level of z-axis attacking, it isn't a large distance, but it'll still keep you looking around.

The dreary dark lighting really hits the mark on the setting of this map amongst the Nali ruins. Really gives that creepy, abandonned, lost in the wilderness feel to it, aside from the rockets whizzing by your head. The doesn't offer a whole lot for architecture to be honest, but it does have what I've not seen in many of the newer engine maps, and that's atmosphere. Hooting owls (no not Hooters), howling wolves can be heard in a distance, and is that faint sound I hear from a Skaarj Queen? I think I'll stay down here in the ravine.

This is my entry to the Unreal Playground onslaught mapping contest. Was a bit of a rushjob in places so it's obviously not my best work by a long shot.
Anyways, be warned, this map has no vehicles so don't go downloading and then rating 1/10 if all you want to do is sit in a leviathan all day getting holy chits :p

I'm working on a much better ctf map atm hopefully for msu phase 3 but I'll be amazed if I get it finished in time since it's quite ambitious :)

Hey, thanks for the review + comments. I'm really pleased that it's actually got such a positive response cuz although I normally don't like my own maps anyways, I really didn't think other people would like this one either and I was almost not going to bother releasing it :p

I give it a 7 cuz it was the first ONS map without vehicles which makes it different and means you need new strategy. Layout is also different for ONS, but at the same time it can be annoying. In some places you can blast away at the next node from another. Bots give a nice hectic battle near the middle, but a few well placed rockets should send them off the cliff.

Nice map Bot. I have played it several times with bots and with the lightning gun on godlike.... lol forget about scoring.

But with eight peeps online it's like a combinaiton of DM, DD, and ONS. Very fun. A nice change of pace from the usual. Looks damn good too. But I hate to give it a number since we know each other... lol But it honestly deserves this

Very, very nice. Before I downloaded this, I thought a melee onslaught map would be pretty silly but this map proves it can be done well. Because of the long and narrow setup, there is a well defined frontline where all the action is throughout the entire match. Nice visuals as well. I can't find anything to complain about.

this map is a nice twist from standard onslaught and i like the idea of no vehicles, but i found this map too dark, and you cant see the bots well. also, its too cramped. you never get to finish a node, except for the first one of course, with the default setup of 4v4. its really too much players for this map. i tried it on 2v2 instead and that was a lot more fun.
the looks and layout are good as well, but the very narrow pathways just dont feel right. i cant dodge anywhere without the big risk of dodging off them.
overall its a nice original map, and i hope to see more non-vehicle ons maps soon.

yeah! thats what I'm talking about! I love this map funny thing is I was thinking about doing an ons map without vehics as well. wtg on this one. Its kind of weird I mean theres really "one" straightforward path to everything its a spam fest, wonderfull spam fest lol. I give it 7. looking forward to seeing more maps from you.

It's a little too dark. Aside from that it'd make a great DM map but ONS - I'm not convinced. It's pretty original though as I haven't seen an ONS map like this before... Don't like maps where you're falling down a cliff every two mins though but that's just me and I'm probably crap.

this map takes a gamble, and almost pulls it off.
onslaught without vehicles is definitely capable of being fun, as this map is. however, while this map is fun, it lacks variety. there is basically one route from core to core. to attack the enemy base, you have your choice of running:
a. on the left cliff*
b. on the right cliff*
*cliffs can see each other at all times
so basically, you are unable to sneak past any defenders without confrontation.
this map quickly turns in to respawning, running towards the enemy base, attacking, dying, and respawning et cetera. if you like doing this over and over without making much progress each time, you will enjoy the gameplay of this map. i think everyone can...at least for a little bit. it gets old.
also, the southern base has nodes much closer to it than the northern. this would matter a lot, but since the game is stalemated most of the time anyway due to not being able to get to the power core without passing each and node on the way, it doesnt unbalance it as much as it could on a more open map.

the map looks very nice, however, and earns my 9 wholeheartedly. the rapids flowing through the middle never seem to get old when falling in to; karma physics are a thing of beauty.

looks 9 + gameplay 5 = 7

Nice to see a bump for this. Those two zeros bring the score down a whole point.

"I don't like ONS without vehicles" --> 0
is like someone knowing a map uses the Egyptian theme, then saying "I don't like Egyptian themed maps" and rating the map a 0.

I love this map. Takes about 2 minutes to get Combo Whore. My only complaint is that it's too dark and requires a bright skins mut to really enjoy.

edit: True, it plays a bit like old UT assault. That's what I like about it.

I played it long time ago.
- In my opinion it's too straightforward and it would have been better with some more alternative paths.
- Everything is too narrow, the shock rifle owns everyone here. A little wider would have been better (more space to move, and better for teamwork...)
+ Looks great!
+ Interesting z-axis in some spots.
+ It's something interesting, well worth the download. I prefer vehicle ONS though (Assault is much more fun for on-foot action...)
