Now, from judging this Darth Weasel's last map, CTF-Osmosis, I'd think it would be automatic that you download this map. But in case you're a moron, or one of those really suspicious people, I'm telling you: DOWNLOAD IT NOW!

Ahem, now on with the review.

AWE: 2.5
Not quite one of the higher end 2.5 Awe scores, but it makes the cut nicely. His jagged arch/support work is really great looking, some of the most interesting stuff I've seen in maps. I love the canopy ceilings in the larger open rooms as well, the beams lead your eyes across a wonderful sky. Most of the doorways are a trapezoidal shape, but still have a solid look to it. The really awesome doorframe is that to the only door-mover in the map (pic 4, bottom left), with the knobby angles that match the textures.

Lighting does a perfect job everywhere in the map. Large lamps hanging here, wall-inset lights there, the texture pack included has small lights, perfectly separated for longer halls. Enough toa subtle amount of light across the width of the hall, and the length to the next light. Great red lights to give the ceiling color and life, but nothing too bright to effect the floor. I think you get the picture.

Texturing does a lot of work here, moreso than most other maps. While some of the halls may be architecturally flat, the textures add a depth and variance to them, really drawing your eyes away from the actcual flatness. However the author did miss quite a few alignments on some the angles where the wall and ceiling meet, I know the funky angles of them make it really hard to align, but something just to keep in mind in the future. But overall, the texturing is no doubt solid, especially with the added texture pack; and for some reason, it almost felt like an Unral 1 type map, maybe the gameplay had something to do with that, which I'll get to soon...

BUILD: 2.5

First off, bonus points for the music file "Mayhem" that was chosen. ;-D Plus it really fits the gameplay of the map. Sounds aren't really heard in the heat of battle, but they're more of the atmosphereic rumblings of an industrious facility. I saw one tiny HOM effect, but it's not an issue for gameplay. The skybox is magnificent, with the terrain added in, makes you feel as if you're in some kind of large hole in the mountains. What really makes it cool, is the light effect, looking like the sun is really low in the sky as one half is lit with a reddish/orange, and the other side is in the shadow of the mountain. Nice work.

CAST: 3
Yep, that's right, a 3. Mostly because of the z-axis options that are available, which is a lot. I haven't seen this sort of layout, size, and gameplay in a map since the days of Unreal 1, there's very few UT maps I've played that have accomplished this, but DM-Ochre is the best. 12 players makes for a nice match, but will comfortably fit 16 for a little faster paced play. Bots get everywhere in the map, however they do tend to migrate back toward the larger main areas of the map, and was rare that they grabbed the sniper rifle, but you'll still need to be watchfull wherever you are in the map.

This map flows like fiber through your colon. Plenty of routes to choose from at all the intersections on the 2-D aspect, add in the z-axis, and you can jump down to any of the floors clear to the bottom in some sections, and that's 5-6 floors to decide on while falling. That goes for translocating your way up as well. It may seem rather complex at first, but once you play it enough, it's great. Item placement is good, with ammo next to their weapons, and some random ammo placed all around, to keep the gameplay moving. Health is spread out well, to keep you on the move if you are in need of it.

SCORE: 8
Now I know that somehow 1-on-1 deathmatch maps have been really popular with UT, but DM-Ochre is a great example of how larger deathmatches are so much fun. You won't be disappointed in downloading this one.

Hey, you should mention that some textures are made by rorshach(or edited by Ulukai, if you took them from DeNovo). Anyway, solid map.

Wow... Darth Weasel, you've got some talent.
This map is simply bursting at the seams with detail. There aren't hardly any flat, bland walls. The use of lighting is ideal for the texture set. The sky box is basically Knell's but with some actual terrain.
And now for the bad. The lighting shifts from an ambient red/orange to a cold pastel blue. This is a welcome alteration but, in my opinion, wasn't done right in some places. My second point is that the item placement is a bit on the sparse side and the flak absolutely dominates the game. My last beef with this level is that the hieght differences in some places are absurd. At that point it's not fall damage but fall death.
Overall, this is a very solid map with it's very small share of problems. The industrial them is sooo overdone but this one's no let down. Boys and Girls, Darth Weasel's made another hit.

never was a fan of these textures, they're too tiled and don't mix well
didn't like the gameplay here, it's to vertical

Very good design ! Though, I don't know why, bots keep standing rather than running.

Here's my 2 cents....well, more like 2 grand! I really like this map! I liked the textures that you chose for this map, and the lighting, flow and gameplay were top-notch. Good sound usage, I liked that the skybox had natural terrain, and this map has one of the best custom tracks that exists (and it's been used in quite a few!). This still shows youth in the good old UT. Great work!

A visually rich map, DM-Ochre makes very good use of its rusty texture set. The depressing lighting also works well and I really liked the light silhouettes on the ground and the subtle rotating fan effect around the fans. It's clear the designer paid strong attention to detail and the mantra that the absence of light is just as important as light in an eerie map.

My criticism is two fold.

One, there isn't enough to distinguish one room from another - everything sports the rusty industrial theme. While the flow is obviously competent since the map loops back on itself, it's not terribly easy to grasp the complicated layout.

Two, the bots aren't as smart as they could be. In several cases, there is little variation in how the bots navigate the map - they tend to walk in the footsteps of each other from point A to point B. They will still present a challenge on higher difficulty levels, but they aren't particularly bright.

Otherwise, a great map to kill some time with and lots of creative styling ideas for new mappers to learn from. ^_^

Hmm, I think some of you people didn't get a chance to play much of Unreal 1, because a lot of those maps had better z-axis than most anything put out for UT. This map really reminded me of the good old days. Maybe some of the NC vets can back me up.

I also probably could've went with a 2 on the Awe score, but no harm nor foul with a 2.5. If you don't like it, tough. ;-)

VERY nice map darth weasel! I haven't had a round of fraggin' this good for a while. Visuals seemed really nice to me, but I'm no expert there. The z opportunities were great, though. But in the end, the map ends up too big for its own good: parts of the layout go more or less ignored while others see constant battle, and finding a weapon upon respawning isn't always easy. The map's got some problems, but weasel definitely deserves props for it.

Yeah, easilly an ownage map. Architecture is very solid and makes you stop to look in most places. Didn't test the gameplay too much, but I do like these maps which give you more than 256/512 units z-axis for once and stil don't feel too cramped :)

Hope you don't beat me to the MOTM, I had my eye on that for a while, you can have the next one :p

Very sweet map, great work. I loved the change from the usual 1-or-2 level maps. Only a few parts of the map don't seem to "fit," and although the botpathing is lacking, it certainly gets the job done. A keeper, for sure.

Hands down...this map rocks. The bots are tough at this level, every time I end with about 7 kills and in second place with Godlike bots. I can never seem to win. The challenge is great tho.

Great map dude.

Nice, i love this map :) only thing i see wrong (and is not even with the map) is the suggested player count, i found 4-6 to be a bit small here however. Other then that its prolly the best dm map i have ever played =D

someone said it was like playing ut2k3??? well, yes in a way, some parts of the map seemed like professionally designed static-meshes.
here we get some really great looks! the floorplan really kicks ass and the lighting's cool and on and on and on... (almost) no point where one could talk about making mistakes or poor layout.
really cool map!

I have this map so long and I never really looked at it.
If you just have a quick look you would say it's great! But if you take a bit more time you will find thousends of missaligments.
Gameplay is cool. You have these real great spots where you have excellent Z-Axis...I really liked it...
