The map is not the most original concept: A large Bastion atop a high mount, surrounded by a moat and cliffs. When you start playing you quickly forget that everyone has tried the fort concept, as this map is very well thought out. At times the map does feel a little bit like a Quake map, but it has enough familiar features to keep you aware that you are playing UT! There are 3 main areas, all of which are seamlessly integrated together. The Entrance to the fort is a small causeway, decorated with highly functional battlements and a watch tower, where you can oversee the action inside the keep, and admire the drawbridge. Once inside the gate, there is a very complex series of open areas and enclosed rooms, all perfectly knitted together to keep the action fast and furious. There are several lifts, ramps, stairs and walkways which lead up to the roof which, like the entrance area, is also decorated in battlements. The floor plan is quite cramped and claustrophobic, so more than 4 opponents gets a little hectic as you will always have someone at your back fragging you.
I think the thing that struck me about this map, is it's consistency, there are no stylistic deviations anywhere, everywhere you look, there is stone and steel. Done improperly, this style could be monotonous, but the lighting is perfect, and very realistic, when you are outside, you do feel like you are outside on a cloudy day. There is plenty of attention to detail, all the dark rooms are lit by lanterns, some of which are very well inset into the wall. I found the floor plan to be a bit busy at first, but after a couple of minutes it soon becomes familiar. The bots maneuver around this map like they are posessed! I got trounced a couple of times, then had to change the skill level to Experienced before I had a chance! There are many small corridors for line of sight, and the bots exploit them to the fullest when trying to kill you. Weapon placement is well thought out, and at times it can be a bit of a struggle to find the perfect tool for the job, powerup camping could be a problem in multiplayer games. The damage amplifier is suitably tricky to get, since you have to shoot a door on the far side of a gap (The entrance) wait for it to open, then jump across, you are rewarded with a nice sniping platform though. The shield belt and invisibility seem only accessible to someone with a translocator.
I found the level played really quickly, and didn't have much problem with slowdown until I had 4 or 5 bots on the go. Poly count is high, and I think that my system is the bare minimum for the map (PII-300, 128MB RAM, V2-SLI) apart from that, I have no real complaints about this map, It rocks, end of story. |

| Deathwing | Rating: 6.5 | | Old and smelly....
| Akuma | Rating: 7.5 | | I disagree, this is a very cool map (some layout problems aside)
| Sidney 'Clawfist' Rauchberger | Rating: 7.5 | | I have to agree with Akuma :)
| crazy_roger | Rating: 7.5 | | Me too ... :)
| RiDdLeR | Rating: 8 | | Wow! Akuma liked a map! Anyways, I like the theme and presentation. Sure its been done before, but this is done well. No dainty castle here, but a brutish, hulking citadel.
| Pl@yboy | Rating: 9 | | This map is one of my all time 10 fav. maps. Cool sniping spots, perfect weapon placement, wicked castle architecture, hard to get invisibility, good camping spots. Flow is right for up to 4-5 players. Come on, this map deserves better than a 6!!!
| Twrecks | Rating: 8 | | The gate facade and the interior are well done. Architecture to the rear begins to degrade. Still a fun map.
| C.H.U.D. | Rating: 7.5 | | /me likes a lot.
| _UE_Hunter | Rating: 8 | | I like it. Good use of architecture all around - one of the best looking castle maps out there (second to Falkenstein at best) I'd like it more with some jumpboots to help with the vertical layout. btw what happened to the author?
| Dai | Rating: 6.5 | | weird&boring
| Agent X | Rating: 6 | | Too tight in some areas, good design, but I like a more minimalist/generic approach to archetecture, that lets the layout do the talking, and the lighting playing the role of eye candy.
| Shock6822 | Rating: 6.5 | | Old and smelly DW? Smellier than you? :D
| fragswill | Rating: 8 | | play with the darkmagic mod
| Metago | Rating: 7.5 | | Some ugly texturing
| Lophead | Rating: 8 | | Reducing this map to 6 (from its original 9) I thought was a little drastic. Sure, lift the standard by adjusting the old overrated maps but this wasn't one of them.
| Duke 11-29-2002 02:41 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | I think this map isn't made for taking more than 3 or 4 players at a time. The reason... weapons. The mapper may have got everything right, or almost right, but weapon and ammo placement surely isn't the strong point of this map. Anyway, I still don't regret downloading this map.
| Manticore 09-03-2004 09:03 AM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Brilliantly executed theme. One of the best which has lost nothing with age. A must download for anyone who appreciates UT99.....
| cobra6 09-03-2004 01:53 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | I agree whit Manticore.
| CromlecH 09-13-2005 04:41 AM MDT | Rating: 7.5 | | Dug out some old maps and decided to give them a go.
Nice map, like the gfx, but got confused by the 2--16 player recommendation, so launched it in teamplay mode and *splat*, got telefragged at start.. hate it when that happens, launched it in normal DM with 5 bots and was in for a good fragfest. One of the maps where one has to run for cover and thats always a + :D
